Introduction
E-learning is a rather recent development in the classroom as well as distance learning
environments. Till very recently, no one really knew of e-learning, although there was some
awareness of online learning, computer based training and also web or internet based training
(Henry, P.,2001). E-learning, as a concept has always been equated or related to distance
learning, even though these two terms cannot be called synonymous (Dašić, J., Dašić, P. and
Šerifi, V., 2012). Education on specific skills or subjects was provided through distance
education or learning long before the arrival of the internet (iSpring, 2016). On the other hand e-

2017) where online courses can be completed for college degree credits, getting certificates or
just to acquire knowledge. E-learning has made commuting to the classroom a matter of choice
and not a necessity while providing the students with the opportunity to get a degree online and
learn at their own pace (Ayers, R., 2018). An internet connection is all that is required in e-
learning to get access to lessons and study materials for any course of choice. E-learning is
being rapidly adopted in education due to wide and growing access to the internet and the many
benefits offered by the concept.
In education where students and teachers are separated by time or space, e-learning with
information digital technologies have helped in bridging the gap by fostering rapid expansion of
distance learning (Zhang, N. and Bao, H., 2010). E-learning is the employment of information
and communication technologies in models of learning to enable (either fully or partially)
individuals, groups and organizations in gaining access to education, acquire skills and
solutions for better learning (Bates, T., 2005). Technology which gives the element of flexibility
in the learning process and the interdisciplinary approaches to teaching and learning can be
highly beneficial for universities with the use of distance education (Mahlangu, V. P., 2018). The
