TITLE – TO ESTABLISH THE INFLUENCE OF E-LEARNING IN STUDENT'S ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
Aim: The present study has been made with an attempt to establish the influence of e-learning in student's
academic performance.
Objectives
To understand the role of electronic learning.
To analyze the impact of e-learning websites in education system.
To investigate the effectiveness of e-learning websites on students’ performance.
To analyze the importance of online learning tools in education settings.
ABSTRACT
E- Learning has become increasingly popular learning approach in higher educational institutions
due to the rapid growth of internet technologies. It has enhanced facilities in the area of teaching
and learning. The study has been conducted to explore the impact of e-learning on the academic
performance of students. In this respect, researcher conducted an experiment to find out all those
benefits which students are acquiring from e-learning approach. Based on the results,
recommendations are made to students and teachers to embrace technologies tools for learning
purposes. In relation to online teaching, some studies indicate that this medium of delivery has a
positive impact on performance on students because they develop the ability to learn diverse things
through electronic modes.
RATIONALE
The research study has been focusing on e-learning and online
learning which helps the students to learn through the sources of internet
and electronic technologies. It also allows students to improve learning
experience by augmenting the opportunities for interaction and
collaborative learning with others. Online learning assists the students to
get knowledge about various aspects and it also assists in creating
learning environment at the classroom. In the present research study,
researcher has given emphasis on all those aspects that helps students in
their education along with its impact of use. Researcher has also
highlighted how the approach aids students to become self-dependent.
LITERATURE REVIEW
Role of e-learning
According to the viewpoints of Clark and Mayer (2011) e-learning may be defined as a
tool or process in which students learn several aspects through the means of internet. In the
present era, most of the institutions make use of e-learning concept for the growth and
development of students. Garrison (2011) said that e-learning plays a vital role in enhancing the
knowledge of students to the large extent. It enables students to become independent rather than
relying on their tutor. E-learning sites offer opportunity to the students to strengthen their
knowledge level by gaining deeper insight about the varied subject area or field. However, it is to
be critically evaluated by Lee (2010) that e-learning also affects the growth of students in the
negative direction. Moreover, there are various field such as finance in which students face
difficulty in learning the concepts. In the practical subjects, student prefer to one-to-one
interaction.
Impact and effectiveness of e-learning websites in students’ performance
According to the viewpoints of Driscoll (2010) e-learning has made significant impact on the
education system. In order to cope with the world of technological advancement it is vital for the
education system to adopt e-learning system. Now, academic institutions make arrangements of
the online lectures and seminars. It provides opportunity to the learners to get extra knowledge
out of their books. Thus, e-learning provides assistance to the students in performing more
effectively and efficiently. With the help of wide knowledge about the subject area students are
able to get success in their academic future or career to the large extent. Moore, Dickson-Deane
and Galyen (2011) argued that e-learning creates confusion in the mind the mind of students.
Moreover, most of time e-learning concept differs from the ways or processes which are
mentioned in the books. In this, students are getting confused about the way which they needs to
undertake for solve their questions or queries. Woolf (2010) said that e-learning also enhance the
familiarity of students with the technological aspects such as computer, internet etc. Besides this,
students can accesses the notes and modules of the su8bject area through the means of internet at
any time. Rennie and Morrison (2013) claimed that at breakdown in the instruments such as
computer etc. and electricity cuts are the main factors which closely influence the e-learning.
Besides this, low server problem also affects the learning aspect of students to the great extent.
Due to these aspects individual or students are unable to learn the subject modules and other
aspects. On the basis of all the above aspects it can be said that e-learning has both positive and
negative impact on the growth of students.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research approach: In the present research, researcher makes use deductive approach to conduct quantitative
investigation in an effectual manner.
Research philosophy: In order to assess the quantitative aspects of e-learning researcher employs interpretive
philosophy which helps them in finding the suitable solution of problem.
Research design: To evaluate the impact of e-learning on the growth and academic performance of students,
quantitative investigation has been undertaken by the researcher.
Data collection techniques: both primary and secondary data has been collected by the researcher.
Sampling: Researcher selects 30 students who make use of e-learning system by taking into account the
random sampling technique.
Data analysis: SPSS technique has been used by the researcher to analyse the quantitative data.
Ethical consideration: Researcher has not compelled respondents in relation to the filling of questionnaire
(Pickard, 2012).
Limitations of the research: Outcome of the research is limited to the viewpoints of 30 students which is one
of the main limitation of the present investigation.
Students have been using internet sources on higher extent which can be
seen from the responses of 15 students as they said that they spend
around 1-2 hours on online study. However, 10 students said that they
spend 2-3 hours for e-learning because they are highly dependent on
such source for encouraging learning level. Remaining 5 students said
that they spend more than 3 hours on internet for learning. However,
online study does not require handouts and other learning materials; thus
students prefer it the most. Thus, somewhere excessive use of internet is
not feasible.
When students learn things their interpersonal skills also increases and
this helps them to become more competent and capable. While asking
the subsequent question, 28 students said that their computer skills have
increased a lot and they have also learned many things from internet and
electronic sources. However, on the other hand remaining 2 students
said that they have not seen any development in their skills since online
learning makes them dependent on electronic sources. Further, this
reflects that e-learning is useful from many grounds; however it also
affects thinking capability and analytical power of students.
From the responses of students, it has been analyzed that they prefer to
study online because the source helps them to learn varied aspects at a
single time. Out of 30, 25 students said that they prefer to study online;
however remaining 5 students said that they do not prefer to study
online. However, in such respect 5 students said that they prefer to make
handouts for studying. They also consider the importance of practical
knowledge; hence those students do not prefer online study.
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
On the basis of above study, it can be said that students prefer to study through electronic sources
because that helps them to grab knowledge on varied aspects. Students are engaging themselves more in e-
learning because they find more growth opportunities from such source. However, on the other hand, e-learning
has enhanced absenteeism in classroom teaching which affects student's capability and performance. At the
same time, e-learning accelerates the scope of learning and this also reduces boredom from classroom learning.
Hence, the source is highly useful in terms of making the students familiar with technological aspects. The
capability of students have been increasing; therefore they are focusing more e-learning approach.

Besides this, non e-learning concept also offers chance to the students to resolve their queries to
the full extent. In accordance with the viewpoints of Paechter, Maier and Macher (2010)
institutions place emphasis on the adoption of e-learning which helps them in devoting the time
of students on learning rather than writing. Thus, e-learning technique helps in widened the
knowledge base of the students to the significant level. Further, now each person has smart
phones and they spend lot of their time on social networking sites. Thus, social sites also make
remarkable contribution in the development of students. Moreover, on social sites individuals
share their ideas and suggestions with each other. Thus, e-learning plays a crucial in enhancing
the competencies of individual.
