Database System vs Traditional Paper-Based System

The traditional paper-based system for storing information has limitations such as difficulty in maintenance, data redundancy, and unauthorized access. In contrast, a database system offers a better solution by using tables to store data, allowing for easier retrieval of information through simple queries and eliminating data redundancy. Additionally, databases provide secure access to authorized users only after successful login, with options to restrict user operations.

Problems :
1. The first problem with the traditional way of storing the information is that it is hard to
maintain. With time the number of records will increase staggeringly which will make it
difficult to keep track of them. The data will also become redundant.
The database system, on the other hand, handles it very well. With the help of tables, it’s
easier to store the data. Each table uniquely defines one aspect of the system and with
simple queries information can be extracted from database. Also, the data redundancy will
be eliminated too.
2. The other problem with the traditional paper based system is of the unauthorised access. If a
person gets his hands on the papers then he can manipulate the data as he pleases. But
Database provides access of the information only to the authorised users. The user has to
first authorise himself using the credentials and only after the successful login he can
read/change the data. Also, in database, users can be restricted to some operations. Like
some users can be restricted just to read from the database while having no authority to
change it.
