INCORPORATING EBP INTO CLINICAL PRACTICE
Introduction:
This assignment assumes the situation where evidence based practice is being utilized
to improve the pain management practice in the health care facility. Although, the process of
evidence based practice is very critical and it involves many factors that is needed to be taken
into consideration in order to successfully implement the process into action (LoBiondo-
Wood & Haber, 2017). This essay will attempt to illustrate the entire process of evidence
based practice and its successful implementation in clinical practice, involving structure a
PICOT question, streamlining databases, and developing a final search strategy using a single
database.
Discussion:
Structuring a PICOT question is one of the most fundamental step in the process of
evidence based practice implementation. Structuring a PICOT question involves developing a
research question taking into consideration all four elements of a PICOT, population,
intervention, comparison, outcome and timeframe. This structuring helps in the development
of a detailed research question which addresses the exact issue or area of concern which is
being researched in the study (White, Dudley-Brown & Terhaar, 2016). Along with that, the
structuring the PICOT question also helps in the development of research phrases, which can
be matched into different combinations using the Boolean operators. In this case the topic of
concern is identifying and implementation best practice strategies to offer better pain
management to patients (Pathania et al., 2018). This study will focus to discover whether
music therapy accompanied by regular pharmacological modes of pain management as
compared to just regular pharmacological modes of pain management to provide pain relief
in acute settings. Hence, the research question is:
In population of patients with acute pain, is music therapy accompanied by regular
pharmacological pain relief more effective in reducing pain sensation as compared to just

pharmacological means of pain management.
Table 1:
Population Patients with acute pain
Intervention Music therapy with regular analgesics
Comparison Regular analgesics without music therapy
Outcome Better pain management
Two data bases search for evidence:
After the structured PICOT question is developed and the search phrases are ready,
the next step is the making correct choices for the database which is going to be used for the
actual scoping search for the study, this is also a very important step of the procedure as it
would discuss exactly how effective and accurate data findings will be accumulated at the
end of the study (Harvey & Kitson, 2015). There are various databases available for the
nursing research, a few notable options include Cochrane library, PubMed, Medline, Ovid,
and CINAHL, which is one of the most abundantly used databases used in the nursing or
health care based research. Although, all of the databases are more or less equally useful and
provide the access to a vast range of nursing and health care based research studies, there are
also drawbacks associated with each of them. Whereas certain databases only provide access
to nursing research studies, without any books or panel reviews, there also are databases that
provide the access to more than 4600 journals on nursing, health care or allied or related
topics. Hence, in order to ensure that the search results are of excellent quality and accurately
addressing the area of concern with relevant, authentic and high quality data findings, the
selection of the accurate database is extremely important (Green et al., 2016).
In this case, priority should be given to the databases which have multipronged
searching options. For instance, advanced search or customized search is a very important
