Introduction
America is the land of opportunities which offers great opportunities to all classes of
the people to help them climb to great heights said Historian James Adam in 1931 (Bruner
56-78). According to some authors, the country was and still considered the place where an
individual can become one of the examples of rags to riches in the best possible way. An
African individual who was abused as kid mentally could become New York’s bestselling
authors while a lady like Rosa park could become one of the greatest human right activists
(Bhargava 88-100). It offers a home to every person irrespective of the class, backgrounder
and gender to become their best version. Although America has offered great opportunities to
individuals in past and is still offering to some to realize their dreams but now that American
dream is considered a myth for some due to the rising economic and social equality in the
country. In the recent decade, there has been a huge rise in the income gap of middle class
American and rich one. The economic gap between the two has resulted in serious gaps
among individuals to realize their dreams (Bruner 99-111). These gaps are because of the
high level of education that can be provided to the kids only by their rich parents. The other
gaps which have recently come into play are of social inequality where there has been a great
deal of discrimination among various social classes. The change in social and economic
structure has resulted in the Title of American Dream taken away from the country.
A thesis Statement-
America is the land of opportunities for many but in the recent decade, there has been
a shift in the social and economic perceptions of the country thus making the title of
“American Dream” Partially true.
Personal experience
As an American student, in one of the reputed universities of New York, I had a habit
of making friends from a different cultural background as I believed that he makes you aware
about the various types of cultural existing on a globe. In my first year of university, I made
friend with an African boy named Mark who came with his mother to New York in the
pursuit of securing a respectable position in the society in terms of money, status, and
acknowledgement. He was the brightest boy during university exams and tests.
He always used to get the “As “in all the papers. We shared the strong bond of
friendship because of our dream of achieving the great heights in our career. Mark had a

dream of starting a café. He discussed me about his dream and I gave him the courage that he
can achieve it. As mark belonged from the middles class background, he had some money
which he accumulated by doing a part-time job and partially from investing in shares.
One fine day, after everything related to the opening a café got ready, he visited the
American register office to get the café registered under the American act. The registrar staff
who was an American asked for the huge amount of money for registration which would take
away almost half of his savings. Mark was really aware of the fact that he was cheating him
because of his identity but the dream made him pay the amount and he consoled himself that
the café registration is more important than the amount charged.
After a time, when Mark did not get the letter from the registration office in a months’
time. he visited the office the third time to enquire about the registry process. On this
registration, staff acted quite an oblivion of the fact that he ever paid the money to them and
criticized him that his color of skin does not permit him to open a café in America and he
should better change his color if he wants to open a café. On this, the conflict started between
the two but in the end, he had to leave it as he was made to believe that he is staying on the
land of whites. According to registration office, the situation made him immensely depressed
and he had to check to see the medical psychologist get out of it as he emotionally and
financially was completely broke down. According to rereading America, many individuals
have to face problems of adjustment due to different cultural backgrounds thus resulting in
conflicts between the dream of an individual and individual.
In my personal experiences narrated above, I believe that the American dream to be
partially a myth where individuals from all the background and culture could rise above to
achieve their dream. Some of the facts can not be denied that there have been various great
African and other American unfit personalities who have to achieve their dreams and became
the great entrepreneurs, athletes and writers but it did not happen to other eighty per cent of
people. There are millions of people who come to America in the pursuit of finding their pot
full of gold but at the end of the road, they had to work as a part-time worker in a factory.
According to Comeau, around 1.8 million people come to America but only less than
20 per cent are able to secure their heartfelt dreams while the rest simply survive (Comeau).
Moreover, according to several statics, there are other European countries that are doing well
in helping individuals to achieve their dreams (UNESCO 85-369). For some authors, the
American dream concept is still true but the fact is that there is no such country on the globe

that guarantees the fulfilment of your dreams. Every country has its own drawback that has to
be overcome in the best possible manner to realize the dream. The case with America is also
the same and the American dream concept is partially true because of the potential of highly
competent culturally backward people who are able to achieve the same (Hatzenbuehler,
O'Cleirigh and Grasso 55-66).
Conclusion
It can be concluded that the growing inequalities in America in terms of social and
economic inequalities have made it highly difficult for individuals with huge dreams to
achieve their goals. The poor people who come to the country in hope of securing a healthy
living become poorer due to wide range of economic disparities while those who come to
secure the good social status have to resort to high levels of understanding thus resulting in
effective management in organization.
