INTRODUCTION
The language, literacy and literature is very important to be assessed by the educator. This is particularly because of the reason
that if these three aspect will not be managed effectively then this will affect the working and understanding capacity of the person.
The present study will outline the multimodal text based on the book ‘The Great Bear’ by Libby Gleeson and Armin Greder. In
addition to this further the written explanation will be provided as purpose of the text. Also the use of semiotic will be analysed along
with the detailed analysis of the way how these semiotic is used in multimodal text.

Written explanation
Purpose
A multimodal text is being created in the above part which is being defined as the use of variety of methods for doing or
presenting some data. This concept of multimodal is a general term which can be used in a variety of different manner (Giraldo,
2018). This multimodal text includes different text books, picture books, comics, posters, graphic novels and many other related
things. The purpose of this present multimodal text was to provide information to the reader by just a single glance. Hence, with the
help of this multimodal task it was easier to narrate the story of the bear who run away in the end within the starry nights away from
all the pain.
Introduction of book
The present multimodal text is based on a book named “the Great Bear” which is a book related with the story of a bear who
used to perform at the town square. At the town square she used to perform acrobats, trapeze artists, clowns performed for the
boisterous crowd for which she performed. One night the crowd was yelling her to dance, but she was quiet and was standing still. But
after sometime all of sudden the crowd got quiet after the tremendous roar of her. After the roar she raced to the pole and climbed
higher and higher till the time she reached to the end. After that she just went out in the Starry night full of stars and jumped into
heaven.
Meaning of semiotic
The semiotics is being defined as the study of the sign processes which are any activity or process or the conduct involving
different signs. These signs are being defined as any sign or symbol which communicates some meaning or sign to the interpreter with
whom the communication is being done. This semiotic method undertakes the study of the symbols and signs which are a significant
part of the whole communication process (Bacon, 2017). These semiotic generally involves five different types that is visual,
linguistic, spatial, gestural and the audio. All these makes up the semiotics and are very important for the communication to be
undertaken among the parties.

Explanation of five semiotic system
There are different types of the semiotic system which can be used in order to make the communication in better and effective
manner. This is particularly because of the reason that all these semiotic elements are helpful for effective communication. The
detailed analysis of the five semiotic system are as follows-
 Linguistic/ language- this is the semiotic system wherein the major focus is being laid over the written language that is the
words through which the message is being communicated (Olin-Scheller and Tengberg, 2017). This is very important for the
message to be delivered in proper and effective manner. The major reason pertaining to this fact is that the written message
will make it more clear that what message need to be delivered.
 Visual- this aspect of semiotic involves the still and moving images relating to the message. For making the message much
clear and attractive the use of visuals that is the pictures and the moving images. This will bring more attractiveness to the
message as it involves attractive colours, symbols and layout of the page.
 Audio- this generally involves the spoken words or any message which in audio format. This involves different types of music,
noise, sound effects, silence, different volumes and many other similar spoken message. This also involves the setting up of
volume, pitch, rhythm and other things to make the message much clear and attractive.
 Spatial- this is another type of semiotic which is concerned with using the environmental spaces and the architectural spaces
present in the scenario. This is very important for the person to utilise all the physical spaces being provided by the person. It is
very essential for the person to fully utilise the layout, position, proximity, organizing objects present within the space
provided and other are being used in proper and effective manner.
 Gestural- this is semiotic which deals with the gestures of the person. This generally involves the movement relating to body,
eyes, hands, facial expression, body language and other related gestures. This can also be a good method of communicating the
views of one person without saying any word. Hence, this can be a good method of communication as this does not involves
speaking but expressing one’s thought with help of the expression and other facial and body movements.

Thus, it can be stated that any sharing of the message involves the use of combination of these semiotic in proper and effective
manner (Benesch, 2017). This is very essential to be used as this assist the person in effectively making and managing the
communication in proper and effective.
Detailed analysis of how semiotic system is used within the multimodal text
Within the present multimodal text relating to the Great Bear the use of the semiotics has been undertaken in proper and
effective manner. This is particularly because of the reason that without the use of the semiotic the poster will not be delivering the
message in proper and effective manner. Under this the use of linguistic, visual and spatial semiotic was used (Kavanagh and Rainey,
2017). The major reason behind this fact is that the language or linguistic was used in order to provide the information in proper and
effective manner to the readers. The use of simple language is being undertaken so that the content is easily understandable by the
readers. In addition to this the use of visuals is also being undertaken. This is possibly because of the reason that when the pictures and
other visuals are being added within the multimodal then this will create a better view of the plot of the multimodal poster. In addition
to this the use of visuals will attract the attention of the reader and this will make it more clear and effective for the person to
understand the written content.
For instance, within the multimodal an image of the bear with the pole is presented which clearly depicts that the bear is
coming out the cage in the starry night which feels like heaven to her. The image also involves the starry presentation which makes the
presentation of the multimodal text more attractive and presentable. In addition to this the spatial aspect of semiotic is also involved
within the multimodal (Owrenn Öhlund, 2021). This involved the beautifully presented charcoal and pastel illustration which makes
the work more presentable and attractive for the reader. Also, the combination of all these semiotics has made the working and
presentation more effective and attractive.
CONCLUSION
In the end it is concluded that the use of language, literacy and literature is very essential for the person while dealing with
books and other articles. This is pertaining to the fact that when the language will be clear then only the reader will be in position to

understand the things. The above report evaluated the fact that use of multimodal text is essential to clearly communicate the outcome
with the readers. Hence the above multimodal text involved the description relating to the book “The Great Bear”. Further it was also
analysed that the use of semiotic is very essential in the presentation of the book and its content. These semiotic generally involves the
five major aspect that is visual, audio, linguistic, spatial and gestures are necessary for the effective management and presentation of
the content.
