1EFFECTIVE TEAM WORKING AND COMMUNICATION
1. Introduction
Businesses are mostly based on the essence of communication that is facilitated by the
same with the objective of enhancing the collaborative and integrative functioning of the
different departments. In this relation, Razmerita, Kirchner and Nielsen (2016) opined that
communication holds an important position in the positive organizational operations while
linking with the common goals. On the other hand, Keyton (2017) reflected that communication
enables an organization in promoting transparency of the operations and engagement of the
stakeholders. The major changes that are initiated by the organizations rely mostly on the
transmission of relevant information to the different stakeholder groups. Therefore, the research
will take steps to id4ntify the different aspects of communication and analyze the application of
the same in a restaurant of Thailand. The report will mostly deal with the personal experiences
with the objective of identifying the needs of communication and the manner in which the same
might be developed in the restaurant in Thailand.
2. Concept of communication
Allen (2016) defined communication as meagerly an interaction that is undertaken
between two or more persons with the objective of transmitting important information. The
transmission of the information enables individuals in expressing their ideas, feelings, emotions
and the like with another person or a group of individuals. On the other hand, the organizations
facilitate communication with the view of making the stakeholders aware of the different
processes and transmitting information on the culture, corporate objectives and change that is
planned by the venture. Grenadier, Malenko, and Malenko (2016) opined that the assertiveness
of the communication process enables an organization in influencing the informed decision
making capacities while operating on the objectives of market expansion and sustenance. The

different changes that are initiated by the organizations are reliant on the efficient functioning of
the systems while operating in the different markets. The Shannon and Weaver communication
model underlined the different elements that are involved in a communication process (Zach,
2016). The model exhibited the stages that ensured transmission of information from the sender
to the receiver. The enhanced rate of communication through a predestined pathway enables an
organization in commencing uninterrupted operations while expanding in globalized markets.

Communication is based on the delineation of the context of information which the
sender transmits to the receiver while expecting a feedback. Solaja, Idowu and James (2016)
defined communication as a two way process where the active indulgence of the sender and the
receiver is required with the objective of transmitting the information and getting feedbacks on

the same for improvements. On the other hand, Pang et al. (2018) stated that communication
enables an organizational management in identifying the source of conflicts and resolving the
same with the objective of strengthening the uninterrupted functioning of the business units. The
conflict resolution related operations of the venture would enable the management in developing
a positive workplace culture and collaborative approach through enhanced trust and confidence.
Therefore, the communication process not only supports the individuals in expressing their
feelings or emotions but also enables the business organizations in enhancing the operations
through active participation of the stakeholders.
3. Examples from the workplace
I have been working as a chef in a Thailand based restaurant which faced significant
issues relating to communication between the different departments. The lack of proficient
communication between the different departments affected the rate of collaborative functioning
in the restaurant. On the other hand, I faced significant issues in preparing my dishes due to
unclear communication with the customers in the hotel which accelerated the rate of quality
related issues and dissatisfaction of the customers. Bel, Smirnov and Wait (2018) stated that
proficient communication among the stakeholders create transparency in the operations that
enables an organization in improving the quality of the offerings. The lack of efficient
communication between the customers and the waiters due to cultural barriers also affected my
job of preparing dishes as per the client specifications, resulting to escalations.
The managers in the restaurant are rude and thereby we feel oppressed to hold
communication on the issues that are being faced by us while serving the clients. Qrunig and
Qrunig (2016) opined that healthy relationship between the managers and the employees are
established through sound communication. The managers in the restaurant being unapproachable

affected my job satisfaction as I faced continuous escalations from the customers on the orders
not meeting their specifications. I also faced a major issue as the management of the restaurant
did not believe in participation of the employees and the other stakeholders in the decision
making process. Therefore, we had to collect information from different sources in the form of
grapevine which again affected our operations in the venture. Oetzel (2017) stated that the lack
of efficient communication between the managers and the team members often affect the rate of
operations of the venture in the different markets. I could sense that the declining rate of
performance of the restaurant can be attributed to the lack of proficient communication between
the stakeholders.
The lack of assertiveness in the communication process is greatly reflected through the
attitude of the management towards the workforce through the lack of clarity in the
communication contexts and channels. Sims (2017) defined communication as a two way
process which is necessitated to hold clarity of expression. However, the lack of assertive
attitude of the managers towards the operations affected our activities while adhering to the
needs and expectations of the customers. In other words, Raina and Roebuck (2016) mentioned
assertive communication as an ability to express the feelings of an individual while the sender
and receiver respects the information that is shared between the same. However, as per our case,
I noticed that the managers had no intention of adhering to the assertive communication
practices, which again affected the quality of the propositions that are made by the restaurant.
On the other hand, the lack of suitable links of communication between the customers
and the different departments of the restaurant chiefly restricted my capacity of adhering to their
specifications. McCreadie (2017) stated that adherence to the client specifications, in a service
sector organization, is necessarily reliant on the communication channels. The major

developments that are made by the organizations relied on the assessment of the needs of the
customers. Our restaurant offered customized foods and beverages which is critically based on
efficient communication that could have supported me in developing an idea of the client
specifications, while preparing dishes. However, the lack of specific communication channels in
the organization that would link the customers with us, the chefs, restricted our capacity of
adhering to the specifications that are expected by the customers. Therefore, we could not meet
the specifications of the clients and had to face escalations. Our restaurant also lost a base of
loyal customers and the managers are looking forward to cut their costs through mass layoff.
However, the managers being unapproachable, we could not state the major issue that we have
been facing while operating in our assigned job roles.
Tajudeen, Jaafar and Ainin (2018) stated that the clarity of communication between the
management and the stakeholders affect the intent of collaborative functioning of a venture. On
the other hand, Boiarsky (2016) opined that the lack of trust and confidence among the
employees and the managers can be attributed to factors relating to minimized communication
between the same. The lack of communication also disbanded the integrative functioning of the
different departments in the restaurant. I believe that it must have been hard for the managers to
identify the issues that we have been facing while operating as per the job specifications due to
lack of proficient communication. However, the organization did not opt for developing the
communicational channels, which continued to affect my responsibilities and the experience of
the visitors.

4. Ways of improving through assertive communication
The different ways through which communication in the restaurant could be improved are
being delineated in this section of the analysis.
ď‚· Communication for enhancing Confidence between managers and employees: The
organization must take steps to promote open door policy with the objective of
encouraging the employees to approach the management with the issues that are being
faced by the same while undertaking their specific job roles. Maximized rate of
discussions with the employees would support the managers in examining the issues that
are encountered by the same due to lack of proficient communication platforms for
interacting with the customers. On the other hand, the enhanced rate of communication
among the management and the employees would enable the venture in developing trust
and confidence while building better experience for the customers. On the other hand, the
application of two way communication between the management and the employees
would also enable the venture in enforcing assertiveness. Sims (2017) stated that the
enhanced rate of communication between the employees and the managers of an
organization supports in enabling the collaborative functioning of the different systems in
orientation with the needs of the customers. Therefore, the application of sound
communication between the managers and the employees would enable the venture in
improving the quality of the propositions that are offered by the same.
ď‚· Clarity of communication with the customers: The organization must take steps to
develop a platform like the CRM with the objective of identifying the needs and
specifications of the customers. Clarity of the message from the customers would enable
the employees in the organization to take steps to adhere to the customer demand while

minimizing the escalations. The improvements in the communication between the
employees and the customers would enable the venture in maximizing the loyal customer
base through enhanced quality of service propositions. On the other hand, the clarity of
communication between the employees and the customers would result to satisfaction
between two major stakeholders of the restaurant while increasing the sustenance related
operations of the same. Oetzel (2017) opined that clarity of the message can be attributed
as one of the major fundamentals of sound communication between two or more
individuals. The application of effective platforms for encouraging communication
between the employees and the customers would allow the venture in developing loyalty
among the stakeholders towards the venture. The different changes in the organizational
operations are reliant on the effective functioning of the systems while operating in the
different markets.
ď‚· Controlled activities of the managers: The controlling activities of the managers would
enable the organization in enhancing the rate of operations while operating as per the
needs of the different customers. Qrunig and Qrunig (2016) opined that the controlled
communicational activities of the managers enable the same in ensuring the uninterrupted
flow of operations in orientation with the needs of the customers. The key changes in the
situation of the restaurant will be based on efficient control of the managers over the
activities of the different stakeholders through communication. In this relation, the
enhancement of communication would enable the managers in developing informed
decisions on the issues that are faced by the businesses. In this relation, the controlling
activities of the managers will be specifically based on frequent face to face interactions
with the employees with the objective of examining the issues that are encountered by the

same. The delineation of the issues and mitigation of the same through steady
communication will contribute to the sustainable edge of the venture.
5. Conclusion
Therefore, from the above analysis it might be noted that improvements in
communication technologies enables an organization in improving the quality of operations
while serving their clients and customers. Frequent communication between the managers and
the employees enables a venture in mitigating the issues more efficiently for retaining the trust
and collaborative practices. On the other hand, the clarity of communication between the
employees and the customers would contribute to the quality of the propositions that ae made by
the business. The research developed an assessment of a restaurant in Thailand and the issues
that are faced by the organization due to lack of proficient communication among the employees,
managers and the customers. The research also developed a range of recommended activities
with the objective of improving the situation of the venture while operating as per the changing
needs of the customers.
