Introduction
Communication is defined as the process by which people share their information, ideas, feelings
and opinions to others. It is considered as two way activity and involved shari9ng of ideas or
information between two or more than two people (Wiedemann, and Meyen, 2016).
Communication starts when sender source reaches to the receiver with ideas, feelings and
thoughts. It is considered as the way that helps people to interact, relate, believe, understand
and get connected with each other. In this era, significance of communication skills cannot be
underestimated. Earlier, people use different sign languages and gesture to communicate with
each other. But at present era, the changing roles of individual and globalization and changing
technology made good communication a necessity in all walks of life (Macnamara, 2018).
This essay includes communication skills that are important for individuals to be successful in
21st century. Further, role of communication for mangers and people are explained in the essay.
Effective communication skills become an important part of individual life for sustaining in the
society and this will be included in this essay with enough evidences. At last, different models
of communication are discussed with assumptions and limitations and its importance in the
present era.
Communication skills in 21st Century
According to Macnamara, 2018, communication as applied to human interaction includes public
speaking, nonverbal communication, managing skills, interpersonal skills, intrapersonal
communication and writing skills. All these skills are part of communication and can further

classify as soft skills, generic skills and transferable skills and due to that communication skills
are accredited as essential by employers in all the sectors.
At present, the way people communicated changed because of technologies. In 20th century,
radio, television and telephone impacted on the way people communicate. In 21st century,
multimedia, video conferencing and internet technologies impact unpredictably on the way
people communicate. However, some aspects of communication remain unchanged that includes
written and oral communication. Communication is still considered as the social glue that
connects corporations, nations and families. Macnamara, 2018, stated that communication is also
a problem when people fail to understand and not able to make other understand. It is also
analyzed that introduction of new technologies does not make communication more persuasive,
more effective or more ethical. Johnson and Hackman, 2018, criticized the aspect that
communication skills of individuals become effective after use of technologies rather there are
more barriers to effective communication in this technological era or 21st century.
Communication Model
On the other side, Wiedemann, and Meyen, 2016, highlighted the fact that communication skills
can be learnt and that helps in making communication effective not the source used to
communicate messages. Eunson, 2015, developed a technological and mechanical view on the
process of communication and highlighted the concept of ‘noise’ as a disturbance that reduces
the effectiveness of message or clarity of message.

Eunson, (2015) stated that in 21st century the source through which message is transferred plays
an important role as it decide the level of noise in the process and effectiveness of
communication depend on the source opted by the sender. SMR model help in to identify the
barriers in the communication process and make it effective. However, this model was criticized
as it embodies a bad metaphor, this leads to neutral meaning not actual meaning. This model sees
communication as one way process and not two way process and this model also ignores the
social context in which communication happen.
Skills
Communication is the articulation of sending message using different sources, whether it be
nonverbal or verbal communication. The role of communication skills becomes important
because of technological advancement, globalization, increasing diversity and changing business
environment. Communication is a skill that can be learned according to the requirements and
existing skills of individuals. Skills that can be learnt effective communication includes listening

skills, speaking skills, and ability of an individual to understand nonverbal and verbal meanings
(Wiedemann, and Meyen, 2016).
In the context of organization, effective communication skills are essential for role of leader and
managers. In this 21st century, changing technologies and media and internet contributed to the
greater extent and that leads to more demand for effective communication skills to communicate
across the globe (Johnson and Hackman, 2018). Leaders have to lead diversified workforce, to
understand other opinions and let other understand the leader opinion, these tasks require
communication skills as a person that does not possess listening skills, verbal skills, oral skills
and written skills. Leader considers various aspects at the time of communication that includes
receiver’s behavior and perception, social context and source of channel as per the effectiveness.
Normore, (2016), broader this concept and said that communication is not only limited to these
skills rather it also includes ability of an individual to influenced different type of people and
communication is an activity that is done by understanding the behavior and perception level of
receiver.
Powerful leadership communication
In this era of different styles of leadership used by leaders in order to manage and lead diverse
workforce and control activities, communication skills gain the advantage. The better the
communication skills, the easier to lead others and influence others to work to achieve goals.
There are different styles used by leaders and each style has different set of communication skills
that is followed by leader. Some of leadership styles are value based leadership, authentic
leadership and transformative leadership (Johnson and Hackman, 2018).

“Leadership is expressed through communication and communication is also an expression of
power”. In this era, transformational leadership style is in trend in order to gain competitive
advantage, the way transformational leader lead require strong communication in order to
influence others to accept change (Thompson,2018). Communication plays an important role
when leader communicate its vision to followers and guide them to achieve vision. Effective
communication of vision or goal require the effective skills of communication in leader that give
an advantage to leader to make things happen. Hence, Effective communication skills for
transformational leader play a significant role (Mikkelson et.al,2015).
Adaptive leadership style includes use of communication style as per the behavior of followers
and situation. For instance, the different communication styles used by leader are verbal
communication for people who need motivation, written communication to communicate
performance to others and many more. This indicate that situational leader consider various
aspects at the time of communication that includes receivers behavior and perception, social
context and source of channel as per the effectiveness (Gilley et.al,2009).
Value based leadership style includes four principles that are balance, self-reflection, self-
confidence and communication. This leadership style state that communication style of leader
can be changed but its values and belief remain the same (Men,2014). These leaders
communicate their values and believe to other in their manner. Here also communication takes
place. From the above all the contemporary leadership style it is seen that communication plays a
significant role in this era or at the current business environment. The way leaders lead and
managers manage the organization depend on the communication skills of individuals. Hence, it
is highlighted that communication skills become an important part in the businesses and in an
individual life (Mikkelson et.al,2015).

It can be said that communication is a two way process and it became important in this era
because of increasing diversity, technologies and changing business environment.
Communication is a key that helps in to coordinate with others, solving conflicts and issues
between people and making leadership more effective. Hence, the role of communication skills
in this era leads to success in the personal life and professional life.

It is concluded from the essay that communication skills is a key in 21st era that helps leader and
managers to be successful. Communication is a two way process that includes sender, receiver,
message and channel to transform ideas from one person to others. The role of communication
skills becomes important because of technological advancement, globalization, increasing
diversity and changing business environment. In order to ensure efficiency and to handle these
factors leaders and managers require communication skills. Due to that it becomes important for
leaders to possess excellent communication skills that help them to lead in the effective way. It
is also analyzed from the essay that different author provided different model of communication
that helps in to remove barriers in the process of communication and help in to ensure effective
communication and development of communication skills in leaders and managers. Hence, in
order to be successful in this era, communication skills are essential and need to be developed by
individuals.
