Introduction
Communication is defined as the process by which people share their information, ideas, feelings
and opinions to others. It is considered as two way activity and involved shari9ng of ideas or
information between two or more than two people (Wiedemann, and Meyen, 2016).
Communication starts when sender source reaches to the receiver with ideas, feelings and
thoughts. It is considered as the way that helps people to interact, relate, believe, understand
and get connected with each other. In this era, significance of communication skills cannot be
underestimated. Earlier, people use different sign languages and gesture to communicate with
each other. But at present era, the changing roles of individual and globalization and changing
technology made good communication a necessity in all walks of life (Macnamara, 2018).
This essay includes communication skills that are important for individuals to be successful in
21st century. Further, role of communication for mangers and people are explained in the essay.
Effective communication skills become an important part of individual life for sustaining in the
society and this will be included in this essay with enough evidences. At last, different models
of communication are discussed with assumptions and limitations and its importance in the
present era.
Communication skills in 21st Century
According to Macnamara, 2018, communication as applied to human interaction includes public
speaking, nonverbal communication, managing skills, interpersonal skills, intrapersonal
communication and writing skills. All these skills are part of communication and can further

classify as soft skills, generic skills and transferable skills and due to that communication skills
are accredited as essential by employers in all the sectors.
At present, the way people communicated changed because of technologies. In 20th century,
radio, television and telephone impacted on the way people communicate. In 21st century,
multimedia, video conferencing and internet technologies impact unpredictably on the way
people communicate. However, some aspects of communication remain unchanged that includes
written and oral communication. Communication is still considered as the social glue that
connects corporations, nations and families. Macnamara, 2018, stated that communication is also
a problem when people fail to understand and not able to make other understand. It is also
analyzed that introduction of new technologies does not make communication more persuasive,
more effective or more ethical. Johnson and Hackman, 2018, criticized the aspect that
communication skills of individuals become effective after use of technologies rather there are
more barriers to effective communication in this technological era or 21st century.
Communication Model
On the other side, Wiedemann, and Meyen, 2016, highlighted the fact that communication skills
can be learnt and that helps in making communication effective not the source used to
communicate messages. Eunson, 2015, developed a technological and mechanical view on the
process of communication and highlighted the concept of ‘noise’ as a disturbance that reduces
the effectiveness of message or clarity of message.
