Reflection
In this reflection, the Gibbs' (1988) Reflective Cycle as cited in Chan (2013) will be utilized to
reflect on the incident that happened at the same time as on clinical placement. Moreover, this
model includes six different stages, such as, description, Feeling, Evaluation, Analysis,
Conclusion and Action plan and using these stages as captions in my reflection.
Based on a recent event, I learned something new at my work that critically changed my
behavior about working with other colleagues. In relation to my experience history, I involved in
several activities in nursing areas for delivering my competencies. I managed to do every
required work that was registered by nurses however I made very little communication with
patients based on their health. Recently, I observed that one of my colleagues was highly
indulged with a patient about health and other nursing activities. The work and care provided by
my colleague were credible and appreciated by each member of the hospital. This made me think
that such a situation contradicts with my educational field, (Browne, 2013). I have learned during
my college years that in order to treat a patient and provide care, communication with patients is
not required at that extent.

On the other hand, my colleague was communicating efficiently with the patient which assisted
to analyze the medical history of the patient explicitly. This medical history assisted the doctor to
analyze the reason behind the critical situation of the patient, (Chan, 2013). Hence, it is evident
that communication is a significant tool that needs to be integrated significantly to offer
appropriate care to the patient as well as develop new theories that could assist to resolve the
medical situation extensively (NSQHS Standard 2: Coroner Recommends Changes After Blood
Mix-up Patient Death, 2017).
As stated by (Chang et al. 2013), in nursing communicating with the patient is a significant part
to provide appropriate care and analyze the situation significantly. On the other hand,
(Mietzne&Kamprath, 2013) argued that excessive communication can lead to criticality towards
treatment and would concern ethical standards and policies of the hospital. Based on such
context, I have relatively analyzed that in order to maintain a balance between both aspects, it is
significant to communicate with patients and make them feel free and comfortable in the
hospital. However, extreme care and communication would also create criticality in treatment
that may question the integrity of my own-self. In addition, the incident changed my complete
view to about care service delivery, (Chopra & Ziemba, 2013). I used to think that effective care
is the primary work of every nurse; however, through this incident I learnt that communication
needs to be integrated for maintaining such efficiency and learning the view of patients which
would assist in medication as well as care. Hence, this significant experience enriched my
knowledge and skills that would significantly assist me to build good relation with every patient
and to offer effective care.
