and their impact on the activities of a person working in a group with diversity. At first,
emotional intelligence and cultural intelligence have been defined and their role in shaping
the personality of an individual has been briefly discussed. Further, following the GEIT
result, a personal analysis has been carried out in terms of self-awareness, self-regulation.
Social skill and relationship management. Further, these personal qualities have been
critically analyzed by the help of Johari window model. A personal SWOT analysis has been

3EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE, CULTURAL INTELLIGENCE AND DIVERSITY
Introduction
EI or emotional intelligence is defined as the ability to recognize, control and express
his/her emotion and to deal interpersonal relationships with empathy and judiciousness.
(Ciarrochi and Mayer 2013). According to Daniel Golman’s theory (Khalili 2013) there are 5
key elements of emotional intelligence, namely self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation,
empathy and social skills.
Cultural Intelligence or cultural quotient, on the other hand, may be defined as the
ability to comprehend diverse cultures and working within such context. (Thomas 2015)
In this assignment, our task is to analyze our emotional and cultural intelligence. Also,
we would examine how others’ perception shapes up our personality. Further, I will try to
point out my strengths and weaknesses based on the analysis, and also identify the areas that
requires further improvement.
Self-Assessment
According to the Mind Tool test of emotional intelligence, I have moderate level of
emotional intelligence. It indicates that I have some good relationships, however there are
people who I find difficult to work with. This suggests that I need to improve my people skill.
On the basis of my EI test results, self-awareness is my strong point. That means I am
fairly aware of my needs and desires. Also I can identify my emotions and act accordingly.
Although
Self-regulation or self-control is another virtue that every person should master. As
for myself, I believe have moderate level self-management skill. However, my friends

suggest that this is the lowest point of my personality. I sometimes cannot control my temper.
Besides, I have to improve my ability to deal with frustration and discontent.
In terms of social skill, I may describe myself as an introvert. I am not very
comfortable in being in a large group. I have a score of 6 in relationship management which
indicates that my social skills are fairly moderate. I sometimes face difficulty to blend in with
people as well as I cannot influence all of my peers with my motivation and direction. In this
sense, I somehow lack leadership quality. My peers who have taken up the test for me also
suggest that I struggle to build rapport with people in my workplace.
Finally, empathy is another important aspect of a person’s characteristics which is
instrumental in defining and managing relationships with his or her peers within the group.
My test results indicates that I have a score of 6 in social-awareness. This implies I can
understand other people’s emotion and manage them accordingly. However, this applies to a
very limited group of people. My friends point out that sometimes I do not listen to people
when they are talking to me. Neither do I take suggestions and criticisms very openly. Hence,
this is obviously another concern that I should focus for future development.
Assessment by Johari Window Model
Johari window is a psychological model to assess relationship qualities and mutual
understanding between the members within a group. Developed by the psychologists Joseph
Luft and Harrisson Ingham, the model is used to increase one’s perception on others. The
underlying notion of this model asserts that trust and mutual understanding can be built
through sharing information and learning from the feedbacks provided by peers. (Saxena
2015)

The model consists of four quadrants. Or alternatively, as described by philosopher
Charles Handy, it is known as Johari house with four rooms. (Sato, Kawakami and Hiraoka
2015) The rooms or quadrants are open, blind, hidden and unknown.
Applying the model, my self-assessment can be analyzed as following: My personal
traits such as my dedication and confidence, even emotional vulnerabilities are a shared
knowledge between my peers and myself. These traits belong to the open quadrant.
My friends’ opinion about qualities or traits of which I am personally unaware of
forms the blind quadrant. I get to know about these traits from their feedbacks. For example,
my friends think I sometimes do not pay attention to others’ suggestions and feedbacks. I
become rigid and keep the status quo of my own understanding and judgment. They have
also pointed out that I am not very good with identifying or understanding others’ emotion.
As I have already mentioned that I am an introvert, there are some things that I am not
comfortable to disclose to anyone. These secrets will be regarded as the hidden quadrant of
the Johari window model.
The unknown quadrant consists of the traits or potentials that neither my peers nor I am
aware of. Hypothetically, it may be some talent or ability of mine that I am yet to discover.
Strength and weaknesses
A personal SWOT analysis will be helpful to identify my strengths and weaknesses.
Strength
My biggest strength is my self-awareness and my dedication to work. I know what I want in
life and set my goals accordingly. I am organized and ask for constructive feedbacks from my
peers.

Weakness
My biggest weakness is my social awareness and relationship management. I am not
very comfortable with managing people. Some of my colleagues I find very hard to work
with. As my friends have also pointed out, I sometimes do not pay attention to their feelings
and act very rigidly under certain circumstances. They find that I am not always open to their
suggestions and opinions.
Opportunities
The area I need to work on the most is my relationship management. I need to work
on my understanding of other people as well as on my leadership skill.
Threats
I often get confused about how to react to certain situations. I do not think very deeply
about things and sometimes act on sudden impulses. Also, I sometimes fail to listen to other
people carefully. This has led to misjudgments on both parts.
Development and future opportunities
Australia is one of the biggest economies of the world with a current GDP of A$1.69
trillion. (Johnson 2019) Australian economy is largely dominated by its service sectors
(Edwards 2016). As a student of Management, I aim to be a part of this service sector upon
completion of my course. I currently work as a retail manager where I have to come in
contact with various people coming from different cultures and backgrounds.
Australia is a melting pot of different cultures and ethnicity. There are native
Australians as well as people of African, Asian and European origin. Naturally, they vary in
customs, beliefs and cultures. So, it is important to understand each customer, their

preferences and needs. In order to increase the quality of customer service as well as to
ensure employee satisfaction, I must learn to communicate with a wide range of people
belonging to different cultures and countries.
Diversity does not only imply demographic or cultural differences, it indicates people
with different skills, behavior and attitude. (Barak, 2016) In order to be a successful
professional, I must be open to all kinds of people and learn from their knowledge, skill and
expertise. Learning and development is an important factor in achieving success in
professional life. Therefore, to learn new skills and improve myself, I must be aware of my
potentials as well as carefully consider constructive feedbacks from my colleagues and peers.
Conclusion
Reflecting upon the analysis of my personality, it can be concluded that I need to
develop my social awareness and my skill of relationship management. I have to be more
flexible in terms of opinions and feedbacks and understand people’s perception and emotion
better. This will help me build leadership skill as well as public management in future.
