Analyze the four key elements of emotional intelligence and how they apply to you as a
manager or a student. Are there any elements you need to develop or improve? If so,
why? If not, why not?
The four key elements of emotional intelligence are, self-awareness, self-
management, social awareness and relationship management. Self-awareness relates to the
understanding of self, the feelings and emotions that one feels. Self-management enables the
individual to manage the emotions that they feel. Managing emotions leads to success in life
as it helps in thinking clearly and take logical decisions rather than being guided by emotion.
Social awareness gives people the ability to behave according to the situation. Relationship
management is the ability of people to create connections and bonds with people (Serrat,
2017). It enables people to manage relationships more effectively.
As a student, the key elements of emotional intelligence is relevant to me. Self-
awareness will enable me to understand the emotional situation that I am in and self-
management will help me manage those issues. During my studies, there might be time when
I am feeling particularly hopeless or angry, I will need emotional intelligence to resolve that.
Social awareness informs me about the emotional state of the people that surround me (Miao,
Humphrey & Qian, 2017). Through this I will be able to understand the state of my peers and
find resolutions to make the situation better. Among these qualities, I lack relationship
management. I feel that I am able to understand others but do not have the ability yet to
respond to them or solve them.
According to Vroom’s Expectancy Theory, he suggests people are motivated by two
things: how much they want something, and how likely they think they will get it.
Expectancy is the belief that a particular level of effort will lead to a particular level of
performance. Apply Vroom’s expectancy theory to explain your level of effort in this
