3: Communication for Empathic Understanding Intent: This assessment item builds on all previous assessable activities in this subject. This is an opportunity for students to develop and demonstrate empathic understanding of another person. This activity will contribute to their professional development as future registered nurses, where they will be required to provide empathetic nursing care for people from diverse cultural and social backgrounds.Students will be provided with a variety of case studies and a) identify what may be perceived as empathy gaps when caring for such a patient, and b) identify communication strategies that could be utilised in an attempt to better understand the perspective of the person. Students will draft and deliver an in-class presentation including 3 PowerPoint slides that explores the perceived empathy gaps, and what specific communication skills could be utilised to increase empathy with that patient. references not less than 5 years

EMPHATIC COMMUNICATION
• When someone listen to other person with his
thoughts, attitude, values and emotions to
understand the things and communication
what he/she actually wanted to say is known
as empathic communication.

EMPATHY GAP
• Empathy gap in Empathic communication is the cognitive bias of any person
• Empathic communication is difficult for anyone and it is actually entering in other
person’s life what he/she is feeling and thinking about something
• Examples of Empathy gape are
1. A person feels anger at a time, it is difficult for him to feel calm or act like a calm
person.
2. It is difficult to imagine for a person is actually calm but he will be act like a
threatened person.
3. It is challenging for a person to fight over something while he is in the calm
situation.

The implications of empathic gap is more important when we predict and
interpret people’s behavior (including our own), and it’s essential to realize it.
Empathy gap will be lowered down by enhancing good
communication skills.
Some communication skills are
1. Nonverbal behavior like maintain eye contact, showing positive gestures
etc.
2. Active listening
3. Reflecting back words
4. Self disclosure etc.
