In 3-5 years, I expect to be working for myself at one of my parents’ company. Probably
as a C.E.O of the water company. The water industry serves other industries, for example, the
food industry. Water companies serve different sectors, for example, restaurants, water
companies have different contracts with restaurants, gyms, universities. It links directly to
different industries due to the nature of the business. However, running a family business is
associated with various challenges including arguments over daily operations, differing
opinions regarding the sharing of the business returns and profits and the high level of turn-
over rate among the non-family employees. For this reason and considering I need business
operation independence, I may not consider this as the best choice. However, managing the
business will offer me an opportunity to gain experience which will be applicable when I
open, run and operate my business. My other option is opening a franchise of a fast-food
restaurant. As a first business, it is one of the safest ways to start a business. Franchises have
high potential if the franchisee follows franchisor instruction. With the franchising business,
it would be easier to manage since there will be sharing of operations as each will provide
resources and support.
Having acquired the relevant skills and knowledge relating to business management and
administration, when I complete school, I would take a career path as a business development
manager. Connecting with my 3-5 years goals after finishing school, I believe the role of a
business development manager would offer enough experience to be able to run and operate
the franchise fast-food restaurant. As a business development manager, I will be dedicated to
growing and improving business, developing and fostering business relationships with
suppliers, customers and other business partners. The business development manager job
attracts me because it provides a crash course in technical areas. Additionally, the position
will require me to work closely with organization leadership and senior experts where I will

have an opportunity to learn from the brightest and also get recognition by the persons
making career advancement and hiring decisions. Business development manager career is a
valuable career skill which will be marketable for the rest of my career. Also, the fact that the
position of business development manager is less competitive with higher salaries attracts me
to it (Warren 2015). Another factor that draws me to the career is that it can open up a more
extensive range of future career options.
The role of a business development manager is to build business relationships with
prospective customers to grow the company by increasing the sale leads and expanding the
business by reaching new markets. To achieve these goals, the managers need to enter into
the BDM’S market and research for prospective customers, apply qualifying and prospecting
strategies to reach new leads and work closely with the sales team to ensure the BDM creates
a high-quality pipeline of new prospects and leads (Hart 2019). Additionally, the business
development manager needs to learn and understand the industry’s competitors, the position
of the business in the market and the business’s product offering. As a business development
manager, I ought to possess self-motivational skills, organizational skills, communication
skills and technical skills. For one to qualify for the position of business development
manager, one needs to have a bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurship, business administration
or sales and marketing (Hart,2019). A master’s degree in the field, as mentioned earlier, acts
as an added advantage or defines the level of seniority. Additionally, an experience acquired
from an internship program or a previous job is required. However, as an entry-level,
experience is recommended and not required. In this field, technical skills serve as a
requirement. Such skills include knowledge in marketing automation, communication and
collaboration software and CRM databases.
Examining and evaluating my resume, I believe there are various gaps I need to qualify for
the position of the business development manager. One of the leading gaps is the lack of

experience. With no job experience and the company’s mindset, it sounds challenging to
apply for a position where the members of the team which you are supposed to manage to
turn out to be experienced. Other than the job experience, in my course-time at the university,
I hadn’t acquired any volunteer experience which would stand-in for my job experience.
Another gap is the choice of an academic major in my degree. Whereas the position of
business development manager requires a degree in sales and marketing, business
administration and entrepreneurship, none of them features as my academic major in my
degree. The other gap is the fact that my communication skills are not well polished. These
skills are as critical as the technical skills required to take the role. To close those gaps, I
need to join community service providers as a volunteer. Additionally, I need to advance my
communication skills by undertaking communication training. Blending my degree major
with the job required major would be an added advantage to help me get a chance to secure
the role. Taking professional courses related to the role of business development manager
would assist in closing the career gaps in existence. That notwithstanding, finding a mentor
who has been successful in the position to serve as my guide would also contribute
significantly to increasing the chance of securing the role as I will have advance knowledge
of what I am to expect and how to overcome the current challenges. By taking the highlighted
measures, I will have made an additional contribution towards realizing my long-term career
goals where I will be running and managing my own business.
In tailoring my cv, the focus of my application would be highlighting the specific skills I
possess and which the employer is looking together with highlighting my previous
accomplishments. My resume would be tailored towards showcasing excellent networking
and communication abilities, leadership, strategic planning, analytical thinking and business
acumen. My experience in the tailoring of the CV is that most of the employers rarely take
their time to read through the entire CV. The paramount information must be addressed in the
