Recruiting the right employee for the right job is every organisation’s goal (Lourenco et
al.). Sometimes organisations are perplexed due to the abundance of talented candidate and the
lack of opportunities that the organisation can provide. However, there are also situations where
an employer has to employ such a candidate who do not fulfil the recruitment criteria, yet the
candidate is employed because of the scarcity of employees in the market (Breaugh). The
purpose of the paper is to analyse how employers hire unqualified candidate based on the nature
of job which is not readily accepted by any other candidate.
Buck Fleming is the owner of a two person saw mill where most of the work is done by
himself like cutting trees, driving the truck and then delivering them to buyers. The working
conditions in the mill is hazardous as it includes using heavy machinery and working outdoors in
extreme weather conditions. Fleming’s helper has recently left the job and now Fleming is in a
need of a new employee. The saw mill being in a small village in the northern states, it is
difficult for Fleming to find highly skilled labours who have an experience of working in the
similar industry. Therefore, Fleming interviews three candidates who have applied for the post
and now Fleming is in a delusion whom to hire to work, though none of the candidates are
qualified for the desired role.
Chuck Maki is one of the candidates who lives nearest to the saw mill (1 mile) and being
a young graduate of merely 22 years, he is assumed to have enough physical power and
endurance ability. However, Maki was arrested twice by the DUI due to his drinking habits and
driving with a suspended license. Maki has decided to control his drinking habits and is also
immediately available for the job. Bud Hoover is another candidate who is in approximate 25
years old and he lives almost 20 miles away from the saw mill. Hoover was raised in Kentucky
where he took up a number of jobs, but could not sustain any. Hoover seems to an incessant
