Energy drinks are kind of stimulants that contain added sugar. Sometimes they contain
caffeine. Sometimes they are carbonated too. Energy drinks reach the market packaged inside
small cans or attractive bottles which are easy to carry. The unique selling points of most of the
popular energy drinks like- Monster Energy, Lucozade, 5-hour energy, shark energy, Tab
energy, Pussy, Bawls, Emerge stimulation drinks, Red Bull are the same. All of them assure
people to provide physical as well as mental strengths. The purpose of this study is to analyze the
impact of energy drinks on the health of the youths of Canada to whom energy drinks are very
popular. In this context this essay throw lights on the ingredients used for the preparation of
energy drinks and identifies the adverse health effects of energy drinks.
History and Reasons Behind the Inception of Energy Drinks
Energy drinks was popularized in UK in the name of Lucozade during the year 1929. The
reason behind the invention of energy dinks can be attributed to the urgency of the patients after

the World War I for recovery. During the year William Mark Swartz, a businessman in Chicago
conducted an experiment by adding sugar to the soft drinks fortified with vitamins. This
experiment resulted in the preparation of a drink that gave energy to the youths especially to the
workers of the firms to enhance their productivity again the taste was preferred by the youngsters
very much. The birth of modern days’ energy drinks can be attributable mainly to the country of
Japan. Taisho Pharmaceuticals of Japan prepared the first energy drink. Japan invented
(Lipvitan-D), during the early 1960s, which was considered to be a medicine enriched with
essential vitamins and metabolic agents. Again, during the 1960s, due to the intervention of the
Japanese food technology (Lipvitan-D) came into the market in the form of modern health and
energy booster during the early 1960s. This was again followed by the invention of Red Bull
during the late 1980s, Monster Energy Drink, 5-hour Energy during 2000s.
Why are Energy Drinks are not Considered Healthy at all?
Several researches have been conducted on the existence of healthy nutrients in the
energy drinks as claimed by their manufacturers. Studies have revealed that, energy drinks may
enhance the energy levels of the consumers who are teen-agers, young adults who belong to the
age group of 18 to 24 years, temporarily, but they do not boost their brains. Rather, the energy
drinks available in the market cast upon several negative impacts on the consumers (Breda, et al.,
2014), which may damage their health permanently. The reasons are as follows:
1. Existence of Monster-doses of caffeine:
Most of the energy drinks that claim to provide the consumer physical as well as mental
strengths, contain caffeine in them. The logic behind the addition of caffeine is the same.
According to the qualitative researches, like interviews of some of the tops manufacturers energy
