The world has significantly changed with the introduction of new technologies for solving daily
problems or challenges. At the center of these activities are engineering innovations and creative
moves that make use of the naturally available resources in making the life simpler. Engineers,
therefore, have a primary role in ensuring there is environmental protection of the natural
resources even as they strive to make life simpler. This defines some of the fundamentals of the
ethical moral of engineers. In the current business, there is no proper balance in the utilization of
natural resources and environmental conservation(MacAskill and Guthrie 2013).
Natural resources have been tapped regardless of the consequences to the environment he has
been attributed to the loss of biodiversity and other effects. In the event that the concept of
environmental conservation is not taken care of, there will be the end of economic
activities(Hunt et al 2012). The changes in the weather pattern including global warming will not
be sustainable. The disappearance and complete depletion of the natural resources will
technically lockout economic activities like the farming. There is need therefore to practice
sustainable engineering that does not only solve the challenges and problems of the current
generation but is mindful of the future generation as well. The use of technologies that promote
environmental conservation will mark the evolution of sustainability(Pearce, Murry and Broyd
2012).

Smart Livable Cities
It has been estimated that the world population is concentrated or dense in towns and cities. As a
result of this, there is lots of pressure on the available resources. Engineers have a primary role to

ensure that the planning and provision of services like water and electricity are sustainable.
Making a livable city will constitute proper house planning that allows for expansion, proper
layout of the water pipes and power lines, serviceable sewerage, traffic congestion free streets
just to mention a few. This is what will define the concept of the smart and livable city. The
automation of the operations including the traffic control, fire alarm system, digital water supply
system constitutes the features of the intelligent city(Gil and Duarte 2013).
There is a need for cooperation between the administrations or the governance system of the city
as this directly affects the decision making. Ideas are as worth as their implementation. The
implementation of these ideas needs resources from the administration. Also, the implementation
of some of the innovative ideas by the engineers may call for the changes in the governance
policies hence consultations and cooperation remains a necessity in any decision making. As the
world continues to embrace technology, the engineer's role becomes very crucial. This includes
the redesign and expansion of the services like water and electricity to meet the exploded
population among others.
