Introduction
Social media networking provides several opportunities for employment as compared
to traditional methods. In reality, most of the job openings today are found by word-of-
mouth, however, social media emerges to be more contemplating which necessitates job
seekers to develop effective networking with friends or associates who can recommend good
jobs (Yolanda, 2015). This I can say due to recent research made on the role of social media
in career development when I came to know how social networks can provide me with new
and existing career opportunities. Earlier, I used to start collaborating with whoever I found
interesting but now, I will see for groups that are related to my field of interest so that I can
search ads posted which are relevant to my career options.

Today's workforce although seems to be modernized and advanced, brings in unique
challenges for both employers as well as employees and it's up to us how we navigate job
opportunities provided we want to move ahead in chosen careers. But then, I came through an
article, "6 Ways Social Media Changed the Way We Communicate” where I found that
around 2.8 billion users worldwide use social media platforms to communicate which each
other, making social media an effective tool to boost leads for educational programs as well
as make job postings (Willis, 2017). This shows how our new world has been transformed
starting from building a text in the first years of Facebook until temporary stories are created.
Social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook have changed people's perceptions towards

me a new opportunity to develop my leadership skills by enhancing my confidence and
accountability factors while discovering new techniques. Subsequently, while showcasing my
talent, it is feasible that trust and relationship are built between me and social media
members, which in turn can prove highly beneficial for me in the future.
At the beginning of the semester, I was little concerned regarding my career after
passing the university, but now I am more confident that with the university support and by
using social media effectively I can attain better opportunities while pursuing professional
career. The study made by Carpentier, Hoye, & Weng (2019) finds that social media assists
organizations while they seek information about potential applicants. It can be said that the
research findings have somehow changed my view of social media. Now I am sure that I will
use social media more constructively and build a profile that is noticeable and well
recognized by recruiters. LinkedIn can prove very beneficial for me as it will help me in
making direct interaction with companies and in turn, they will be able to see at my
professionally built work profile. This means, through social media platforms, my
professional biodata will be easily accessed by recruiters besides helping me in searching the
most appropriate job.
It must be comprehended that although social media provides several benefits, it
comes with additional challenges also. While finding sources for my project, I came through
an article that specified how LinkedIn can help firms verify candidates' qualifications.
Though I plan to make a professional biodata on LinkedIn, one of my friends revealed that
once the resumes are been uploaded, it needs to be updated regularly so that recruiters never
get hold of out-dated resumes that furnishes half-truths. This is one issue that needs to be
considered critically by every job seeker as they may fall easily into its prey. Firstly, the out-
dated profiles can leave a bad impression on recruiters mind and while job seeker gets easily
misinterpreted, their intention towards profile building tends to fail. Also, I found that many
me a new opportunity to develop my leadership skills by enhancing my confidence and
accountability factors while discovering new techniques. Subsequently, while showcasing my
talent, it is feasible that trust and relationship are built between me and social media

firms use social media sites to make comparisons between job applicants (FoxHire, 2010).
Furthermore, if someone else’s profile is stronger or more influential, I can lose the job
easily. This means, that approaching a firm directly rather than advertising resumes in social
media proves a better option in some cases.
The idea behind career development occupies a significant position in social capital
theory. Mentoring, mutual support, and job partnering are advocated as key features in social
capital theory which can be connected to success in the professional field. In other words,
relationships built in social networks along with professional ties can constitute a significant
facet known as social capital (Benson, Morgan, & Filippaios, 2013). Social networking
supported by theoretical background has changed my perspective towards social networking
and now I will make further research on social media networking to achieve success in future
career. While the past few years as a student made me separated from social network
members, I will rebuild it again post examination for a professional purpose besides leisurely
activities to blur the differences between my intention and approach. Furthermore, the value
gained by social media will empower me while developing a professional portfolio, pursue
new opportunities, develop my learning skills and extend significant networks that can help
me in creating a benchmark as compared to competitors.
Conclusion
Social media can be positively linked with career development besides reinforcing
social capital. It helps us in connecting with people in a better way and can be assumed as an
advantage in career management plans. After my research paper project and above reflective
writing, I can see the difference between the way an undergraduate and postgraduate student
see social networking and how differently they use social media for professional purposes.
Earlier, social media for me was more engaging and fun-to-live with experience, however,
firms use social media sites to make comparisons between job applicants (FoxHire, 2010).

now I see social media as a competitive tool that can help me in developing my future career.
I will now consider being more active with trustworthy and reliable sources besides
developing a profile more constructively rather than posting irrelevant or least popular posts.
I plan to study ways through which a good profile or resume can be built for online platforms
and make a close study of people who have posted their profiles and have received good job
opportunities. Despite few issues have been noticed regarding over-dependency on social
networking, making further research on it along with finding its application on today's
business can help me critically in developing my future career.
