ENGLISH ASSIGNMENT 2
1. Can a newspaper article achieve 'objectivity’? Write an essay examining the
conventions of a newspaper article, and discuss the extent to which these conventions
are successful in conveying objectivity.
can a newspaper article achieve objecty.?
Introduction
A newspaper article is a written docuument that provides relevant information, stories and
ideas that are relevant to the targeted audience.the information provided by must attract
interest of most of the peole. A news paper is said to have achieved its objectivity when it
successfullyprovides its audience with fair, factual and impartial information.
The main aim of a newspaper article is to provide the audience with the relevant information
without any sense of biasness, exerggorations and untruthful information. a newspaper article
will only achieve its objectivity if it is done with truthfulness, neutrality, and
detachment.truthfulness is the art of providing truthful, correct and credible information
without creating untruthful details to make the story attract more interest from the audience.
Neutrality requires that the ideas be provided in a non-partisan (Davidson, 2013). The writer
should not take sides in favour of any party involved in the story but simply report the true
information. Detachment is all about the approach of the writer. They should report the
information without the influence of their emotions .this will enable the audience to draw
their own conclusions without being affected or influenced by the writer. To conclude, I
would like to say that a newspaper has the ability to satisfy its objectivity but this goal can
only be achieved if the writers abides by the fundamental requirements of truthfulness,
impartiality and detachment because without these, the objectivity can’t be achieved.
What are the Conventions of a newspaper article?
Conventions in this case refer to considerations that an editor or a writer must put in place
before writing an article. A newspaper article has useful conventions these conventions
include; format, headline, by line, information, images or pictures and paragraphs.
Paragraphs- it is a requirement that an editor organises his or her work in paragraphs, the
paragraphing will make the newspaper look neat, it is also easier to read information when
they are paragraphed than when they are arranged in a continuous pross.it is also good for the
writer to make his or her paragraphs short (Dillon, 2018). This will help in keeping the

readers interested in in reading the texts. When the readers read all the texts then they are
likely to obtain the information adequately. The editor should also try to write very important
ideas or information in the first paragraphs since some readers do not have time to read the
whole text so by reading the first paragraphs they shall have obtained the important
information. Therefore paragraphing the work will assist in conveying the objectivity since
the information will be obtained accurately.
Headline this will include the title of the article the title will help in obtaining the readers
attentions. It should also be bold enough to be seen as the title. This will make the readers
feel the need of reading and obtain the information included in the titled article. The headline
should also be short, precise and straight to the point this will make the readers to quickly go
through it and obtain the necessary information (Schuchardt, 2018). It should also be eye
catching in order to keep the readers engaged thought the reading process. When the editor
satisfies all these facts regarding the headline, then chances are high that the readers will read
their articles successfully and obtain true, fair and independent conclusions thereby
successfully conveying the objectivity.
By-line it is usually indicated at the bottom of the page.it shows the name of the writer who
has written the article. The main importance of the by line is that it facilitates quick reading
and assures the readers of the credibility of the information as they get to identify the writer.
When this happens the objectivity is successfully conveyed.
Pictures/images this adds on acceptability by the reader the pictures will make the readers to
believe and rely in the information provided since it describes what the article is talking
about. It can also act as evidence to the readers that the information provided in the article is
true (Kanigel, 2011). Since it acts as evidence and confirms to the readers that the
information is true, and since the main objective is to make the audience obtain the true
information, it successfully convey objectivity.
Information probably it is regarded to be the most important aspect in a newspaper article.
The public would want to obtain latest news, rumours, ideas, gossips and information on the
current issues. The information should be presented with regard to the uttermost truth. The
reporter should also be neutral and make them detached from the information
(Minekhatovich, 2018). This will enable readers to independently make their own
conclusions from the article without being influenced by the reporter. These thereby help in
conveying the objectivity.

ENGLISH ASSIGNMENT 4
To conclude, the convections of a newspaper articles are very instrumental in obtaining the
objectivity.
2. Typically, the newspaper article is associated with ‘factual writing’. Write an essay
that considers at least TWO types of news articles (i.e. listicles, editorials, op-eds,
print, or digital) while examining their different approaches to writing. How do these
types challenge our perception of the purpose of a newspaper article?
Introduction
There are basically several types of news articles. These includes; listicles, editorials,
opposite the editorial page (op- eds) print or digital. They vary based on their formats and
purposes. For now we will only focus on two of them namely; listicles and editorials.
A listicle is one article that usually possesses a list which contains additional details. It has a
very flexible format. The main role of a listicle is to make complicated information easier to
understand by the readers. The use of listicles challenge our perceptions about the purpose of
news article since it is flexible that is it can take any format yet normally people believe that
news articles take specific format (Batty & Cain, 2016). We also believe that a news article is
to provide information as opposed to the listicles that needs our idea.
An editorial is a type of article that shows the writers point of view of the issue. It shows the
perception of the majority of the editorial stakeholders. It requires the writer to create an
argument concerning ascertain topic then lures the readers to think in the same direction or to
conform to his/ her arguments (Anwar & Iramawaty, 2015). The aims of editorials are to
influence the reader’s points of arguments, stimulate people to act on some issues and to
persuade them to think critically. Generally when reading any news article the readers are
expected to be fed with information and not them contributing their ideas but this is not to
editorials that seek the readers’ point of view. The news article is supposed to enable the
reader obtain information without prior influence by the reporter (Førland, 2017). This
perception is seriously conflicted in terms of editorials that attempt to persuade the readers to
conform to the writers’ opinions.
