Introduction
The essay focuses on the harassment issues that are associated with sports. In order to
establish the central theme of the essay, it is necessary to take into consideration the
characteristics that exist while trying to understand the factors associated with spots
harassment. For the essay, examination is made on the letter calls that are received in Canada
in order to address the changes that deal with the sports harassment issue in the country. The
essay discusses the need for an independent body that can help in addressing these issues and
ensure that no racial or ethical inconsideration are maintained in the sporting arena that may
hamper the entertainment it provides to the common people.
Discussion
In recent events there have been various reports of sports person being abused on a
racial basis. Comments are made about a person particularly if the sport person belongs to a
rival team. According to Taylor et al. (2017), these comments are often directed at an entire
race and may have a negative impact on the minds of the athletes. In this regard, example can
be provided by the manner in which Adolf Hitler refused to shake hands with Jesse Owens
during an Olympic match mainly because of the skin colour and the ethnic group in which he
belonged. Although further investigation had shown that Hitler had less time to acknowledge
the presence of the athlete at the stadium.
However, in the recent years such activities regarding the harassment of sports person
have come to light and an argument about forming an independent body of sports tribunals
that address such cases can be made. In Canada, the most recent activity of sports harassment
has been seen on the grounds of gender discrimination in which gender based violence n
sports has been reported through an open letter by some of the country’s finest and notable
athletes (CBC.com 2019). In 1996, Canada had set up a policy that helps in the prevention of

harassment as well as abuses in sports. However, owing to the recent developments it can be
seen that such a policy has not been effective.
An argument can be made of the fact that despite the formation of Sport Canada
Accountability framework, safety in sports particularly on the grounds that involve sexual
scandal has not been implemented in the country with effect. As stated by Tofler (2016) it is
necessary that sports have a safe sports policy that employs a designated individual to take
care of the matters that relate to ethical as well as sexual abuses in sports. At the same time
Government funding can be provided that can help in the development of the sporting bodies
that examine such acts and ensures that accusers in the form of sports person or common
people be penalised.
However, there are critics that complain that development of mere policies and
frameworks may not be enough for the mitigation of sporting harassment. Everbach (2018)
pointed out that policy directions have been proposed that can help in managing the
harassment in sports particularly in Canada. One of the policies that have been proposed is
the development of a sport-by-sport system of self regulation. This has been development
with a more consistent reinforcement provide by the Sporting cabinet in Canada. The main
activity of such as act is that a coalition can be made between the sporting organisations of
the country so that a single institution can be made that help in providing education about
curbing harassment in the country.
In this regard, some of the high profile cases can be considered as examples that may
require the interference of these sporting agents. In the recent years, reports have been made
about resignation of Marcel Aubut, president of the Canadian Olympic Committee. In 2015,
the resignation came as the person had been accused of numerous sexual harassment
complaints against him. Last month the gymnastics coach of the Canadian women’s team had
