Article no. 1
The first article deals with the arrival of Columbus on the shore of America and the
behavior of native people who lived in the villages (Zinn). The description of the Arawaks in
Bahama Islands has been given in this article and praises have been made on the hospitality of
these people. The funding for the expeditions had to be founded by King and Queen of Spain.
Therefore, it was the work for Columbus to find out the gold. The unification pf Spain has been
discussed in this article as well. It has been also discussed the treasury of Gold had existed in
Asia that Marco Polo had discovered (Zinn).
Thee quotes to be given from this article are As soon as I arrived in the Indies, on the
first Island which I found, I took some of the natives by force in order that they might learn and
might give me information of whatever there is in these parts.”, “This was to have enormous
consequences: it led Columbus to take some of them aboard ship as prisoners because he
insisted that they guide him to the source of the gold’ (Zinn). These two quotes are important
because they discuss about the discovery of gold treasury in America and the behavior of native
Indians towards them.
The questions from this article are:
How Indians have behaved with Columbus and his troops?
Why was Columbus impressed with the nature of Arawak Indians?

This article has featured upon the description of discovery of Columbus and his reports to
Spanish King. I find this article very interesting and the vivid descriptions of Indian natives are
so attractive as well.
Article no 2
The theme of this article discusses about the role of women in Indian societies. The
native Indians put more importance on role of women and their reversed importance than most
European societies among them (Zinn). Women had been respected and not all dominated. They
were given their deserved status in their societies. Another topic for this article was Indian
Removal in America and Canada. This was done with the primary purpose that American white
people could dominate the land between the Mississippi and Appalachians. Their purpose was to
grow cotton in Southern regions and grain in Northern region. This article also describes that
most Indian natives had fought for British regime and they continued to fight against Americans
on frontier regions (Zinn).
The important quotes from this article are “In the Revolutionary War, almost every
important Indian nation fought on the side of the British.”, “Jackson was a land speculator,
merchant, slave trader, and the most aggressive enemy of the Indians in early American
history.” These two quotes are really important in this context because they talk about Jackson’s
role in this scenario and the condition of Indians as they fought for the British side in the
Revolutionary War (Zinn).
Important questions from this article are:
What was the role of native Red Indians in the Revolutionary War?
How did Jackson become a hero in the war of 1912?

What was the condition of the country in terms of society and economy?
What were the implications for White Settlement in USA?
I think this article is a very fascinating one and it has brought about the discourse of American
History in terms of Revolutionary war, white settlement and condition of native Indians in
American society.
Article no 3
The topic of this article centers round expansion of the American powers as wished by
Theodore Roosevelt. His disposition of war is quite significant as well. The outrageous
expansion spree of USA has proved to be fatal in certain arenas (Zinn). Their powerful force and
desire for gaining control over other regions like Mexico and other nations on Pacific have been
vividly described in this article.
Two of the most important quotes for this article are: “There was more than thinking; the
American armed forces had made forays overseas” and “While it was true that in 1898, 90
percent of American products were sold at home, the 10 percent sold abroad amounted to a
billion dollars” (Zinn). These two quotes are indeed important since it has depicted the
seriousness of Great Depression of 1893 and poor economic condition of America that insisted
them sold 10% of their products in foreign countries for millions of dollars (Zinn).
Important questions from this article are:
How the economic condition of USA has been depicted in Great Depression?
Discuss about expansionism issue of Roosevelt.
