The Incident:
Who- The recent incident of local vandalism at the community park reflects the lack of sense
and aesthetics of some of us towards nature and the community.
What- Despite restrictions on conducting picnics at the park, many people violated the norms
and participated in one and destroying the natural beauty and resources of the place such as
littering the park with edibles, plastic bags, bottles, etc. They even destroyed some of the
plants in the gardens.
Why- This might have happened due to the lack of knowledge and awareness of many people
on environmental concerns and the need to stick to discipline.
When- The act occurred last Sunday in between 2 PM and 5 PM.
How- The absence of any security guard at the park on Sunday might be a cause.
Appeal to the Readers:
It is my request to the community workers to join in a campaign of restoring the park to
normalcy. A clean-up operation is proposed from tomorrow and will continue till next
Saturday as the park is set to re-open for visitors on next Sunday. Let us act together and put
our best efforts to restore the place to the best of our abilities. Let us assemble tomorrow in
front of our office at 6.30 AM and initiate the operation continuing it till 4 PM regularly till
next Saturday.
Community action for prevention:
It is important to understand that conducting the clean-up and restoration operations might
improve the condition of the community park, but it will not prevent similar incidents from
happening once again. Therefore, what is required from all of us is to undertake some actions
such as organising frequent mass awareness campaigns on environmental issues. Also, there
needs to be a 24-hour manned security deployed at the park even on Sundays. A ticketing
system is proposed such that visitors who are genuinely interested will turn up eliminating the
vandals. There should be fines for littering and destroying the park's resources.
