Conversations are a very significant aspect of people's lives. Evidence shows that conversations
can change plans, goals, relationships, as well as reshape the course of our lives. Understanding
how to communicate is a significant aspect of not only personal growth and development but
also in professional success. A crucial conversation is one which opinions vary, emotions run
strong, and stakes are virtually high (Patterson, 2002). Crucial conversations happen in our day-
to-day interactions, and without even knowing it, they affect our lives or worse. When
individuals engage in crucial conversations, things tend to go wrong because of the nature of
conversation itself as well as pressure and emotions.
My best friend Elsie had left town for Summer; she went to New York to meet her father. It was
a long summer quite dull because it was the first I spent summer away her. I love Elsie because
she is passionate about everything she does. She left for New York to spend some time with her
father because her mother had passed away. Her mother's death took everyone by surprise, Elsie
too. She changed; I noticed because we were very close. Depression and overthinking consumed
her; I tried as much as I could but was not able to get her to open up. When she came back, I had
one conversation with her that did not turn out as I expected. Everything escalated so fast, and
this almost ended our friendship. I was concerned about Elsie, her mother's death had devastated
her, and I wanted to be there for her. Something was different about her when she came back
from New York. In one of our many meetings after returning from New York, I enquired about
how she was holding up after her mother's death. There was silence; everything seemed strange;
the smile on her face slowly disappeared. She was not okay; I could see it in her eyes. At this
point, I was worried about her and how she would respond. Just before she could open her
mouth, I noticed the bad breath from her; she had been drinking all night. Elsie was not an
alcoholic; I was confused and found myself shouting at her. She bit back, yelling at me with lots
