INTRODUCTION
The Refection has played a significant role in creating an upsurge of interest amongst
educators and researchers. It is essential for students to conduct self reflection , as this will help
them in analysing their own strength as well as weakness. It will also support individual in
identifying the area of improvement. Reflection will enable person to plan appropriate tactics ,
strategies as well as policies for improving their learning process. It will enable student to
explore as well as capture various opportunities that will be useful or beneficial in self
development. Reflection encourages student to develop critical thinking. But in context of
nursing it is considered to be as a complex procedure. The process of critical self-reflection
can foster transformational learning in adults. Refection is recognised as higher-order
mental procedure which allows individual in generating positive outcome. It also enables person
to identify appropriate techniques, ways or methods in order to deal with complex as well as
critical situations.
Purpose of the reflective essay is to present application of important skills or abilities that
are required by nurse in order to improve their performance at workplace. I have used Gobs
model in the essay as this will help me in illustrating the facts in six headings. These are
Description, Feelings, Evaluation, observation, conclusion and Tactics.
MAIN BODY
I have been appointed as the Nurse in one of the most popular health and social care
organisation. My role is to provide care and assist doctors or professional in delivering the
suitable treatment to patients. On the second day of my joining the health care company , I have
identified that small child who belongs to the age of 4 years is recovering from surgery. The
second patient that has been admitted in hospital was lady I can't disclose the name of that
women as during the training I have been taught about the norms as well as regulation that I need
to follow when executing my task. Among such laws one of the legislation for employees
working in health care sector is to maintain the confidentiality of data or information related to
patient. The lady was admitted for termination of pregnancy. I have observed that she had
returned to the ward and was not present in recovery. Lady does not understand English. I had
taken high initiative and put my all efforts to calm her down and assure her. But I have failed to
do so because of ineffective communication skills. By analysing or observing her behaviour I

assumed that She was negatively influenced by the fact that , she will be treated by male doctor.
Lady was very upset by this fact. During that time, in order to handle the situation , I have
decided to call ward boy and I asked the interpreter to come back for recovery. As women was
getting more upset as well as angry. I was feeling helpless and demotivated as I was failed to
reassure her due to a communication barrier. But with the support of interpreter I had able to
communicate that it was the presence of the child that caused her upset and anxiety.
Feeling
By observing the situation I felt helpless, as I was facing difficulty in understanding the
problem faced by lady. I was not able to provide her suitable care, solution to issue faced by that
women. At that time I have realised the importance of communication skills. I also felt depressed
by seeing the health situations of little boy. I was more concerned about the fact that woman
patient who has admitted in hospital for termination of pregnancy would have felt isolated. I
was not sure about the problem that is assumed by me is faced by patient.
Evaluation
I had observed that the lady patient who was admitted in hospital was in vulnerable
position after the operation. I was unable top provide her support and care due to lack of
effective communication skills. I had formulated as well as applied several strategies to help that
women but I was fail to do so. I was unable to understand the problems of that lady. The various
actions taken by me was creating high stress for patient. Alongside, Due to communication
barriers I was unable to provide suitable services to patients. I was facing difficulty in
recognising the needs of service user which has lead to high level of dissatisfaction in customer.
This factor has unable me to assess the pain that was suffered by patient and I was facing
difficulty in explaining the treatment procedures to family members of patient. Due to
communication barriers I had failed to develop strong relationship with patient which has
adverse effect on the organisation reputation as well as on performance (Coleman, Reardon,
Strahan & Cougle,2014) By evaluating this factor I was more concerned about my career growth
as well. As I had realised that all these issues have adverse effect on my career and performance
at workplace. I also felt that I was able to look inside myself to challenge my Muslim religious
beliefs, which are fundamentally against abortion, putting these aside to treat lady who has been
admitted in hospital in a fair non-discriminatory manner. I had got success in acting in a

compassionate as well as sensitive way.
I have realised that I have depth knowledge about several norms or regulation that are to be
considered as well as followed when performing job in health and social care institution. I also
believe that I have been successful in working according to the professional code of conduct.
Analysis
I have analysed by reviewing the code of conduct and several norms that Absolution is
illegal activity will may lead to the legal obligation on firm. As Abortion is allowed up to
approximately 24 weeks of pregnancy. As this action involves high risk to mental as well as
Physical health of patient (Anderson, Scrimshaw, Fullilove, Fielding & et al.,2015) I have
realised that I should not become the part of this type of process. I should focus on delivering
quality services and care to patients before or after the surgery or treatment. As per my opinion ,
the other employees including medical professional must give appropriate and comprehensive
care to all patients, regardless of their reason for being in hospital. According to my knowledge,
regulations as well as professional code of conduct dictates that it is required by individual to act
as advocate for those people who required special care or attention. I perceive that besides facing
may issues I had gained success in delivering appropriate care in case of lady who has been
admitted in hospital for abortion. I had delivered suitable services to that lady besides facing
many difficulties I had identified effective ways to deal with the situation. I have also realised
that I have high level of patience as well as potential to handle complex as well as critical
situation.
I have another opinion that it is required by me to become culturally competent , more
caring. As these abilities with allow me to minimise or eliminate differences in beliefs, values
and cultures. It will also enable me to deliver beneficial, significant, quality, proper and effective
services to patient. I have also analysed by my experience that services in health care institution
are compromised when medical staff fails to make patient or their family members about the
physical as well mental health of service user. I had failed to obtain useful as well as essential
information about service user which had increases the chances of medical errors. This was the
big reason that lady who has been admitted in hospital has undergone stress. By experience this
type of situation in my career I have understood that Communication is considered as a
fundamental component in cross cultural care and language difficulties can result into

insufficient care as well as poor quality nursing. I also feel that I have taken high initiative and
put my all efforts in managing as well as resolving situation. I have realised that I need to work
on my communication skills,l this is the specific area which I believe that is required to be
improved. As by working on this field, I perceive that I will be able to achieve success and foster
my career growth. I am much concerned about the fact that the ability of medical staff to
provide care may lead to compromise in quality of services due to communication barrier. I
have also faced many challenges and barriers in my career in health and social care sector. I had
successfully overcome my fear of mistakes. It has been possible through proper training and
other learning activities which has allowed be to eliminate mistakes and deliver care as well as
quality services to patient. By attending seminars on improving medical practices I have able to
develop abilities which has supported me in dealing with cross cultural differences, such as using
non-verbal, translators, communication. I have realised that it is required by me to learn more
high level of English language. As this is the language which is easily understandable by people
belonging to different culture, religion or nation. In my opinion if any of the employee in health
care institution does have effective communication skills, in such situation, interpreter us only
the person who can support individual in overcoming this barrier. I perceive that linguistic
barrier can lead to discrimination which further might result into conflicts or misunderstanding.
Ineffective communication or coordination between medical staff might increase the chances of
medical errors. According to my knowledge and understanding about several concepts which can
be applied by medical professional is ethical hypothesis (Duffy,2008)As this will help
management team in ensuring that all patient are provided with suitable care as well as quality
services. I have also realised that I have The ethical theory states that nurses are responsible for
respecting service user, decision or judgement made by them. It is duty of medical staff to
respect for privacy. It has been analysed that presence of interpreter in the recovery room has
allowed me to perceived by the women in positive way and also reduced her anxiety levels.
I Have also conducted research and study on medical science by in Oder to develop
understanding about pain that might be suffered by lady during the procedure of termination of
pregnancy. I have conducted this investigation in order to increase my knowledge which can be
useful for me in future when conducting medical practices. It will al support me in my personal
as well as professional development. By facilitating study on this topic I have learned and

recognised the important fact that approximately ten to twenty per cent of woman who has been
undergone the procedure of termination of pregnancy suffer from serious negative psychological
complications such as depression, sleep disturbances as well as anxiety,As this knowledge will
allow me to develop the understanding about the symptoms of disease. I can utilise this
knowledge dealing and handling patient with special kind of disability. The various theory and
concepts related to health as well as social care practices has encouraged me to develop critical
as well as innovative thinking which will assist me in managing and coping with complex
situation (Gibbs,2014) I believe that It will also help me in improving my performance at
workplace. Still, I memorise my experience working in health and social carte institution , I feel
worried about lady who was admitted in hospital for termination of pregnancy. I assume that due
high level of anxiety She may have to suffer lot of pain. Lady might have taken longer time for
recovery.
CONCLUSION
I have analysed from my experience working in health and social care institution that it
is essential for every organisation delivering care services that it should appoint interpreter. As
he is only the person who can support medical staff in communication with service user and in
exchanging information (Jacobs,Chen, Kaliner, Agger- Gupta & et. al.,2014) As in my case, I
have able to provide suitable care to lady only through the support of interpreter. Without the
assistance of interpreter I would not able to reduce the anxiety level of patient and explain them
about treatment procedures. By expressing such complex situation and challenges in my career
as a nurse I have realised the important of communication in health and social care sector.
According to my opinion appointment of interpreter is not an effective solution , it is not always
possible to have an interpreter due to scarce resources. But as a colleague , I can protect their
best interest.
Action plan
In coming years, I will continue my career as medical professional in same organisation
in which I am presently working. I will undertake research at small level in order to recognised
various problems faced by service user or patient during their stay at hospital for treatment. This
activity will help me in identifying the appropriate solution to issues and recognising the
appropriate way for improving quality of services. I have planned to emphasize on ensuring that

all resources are position as well as utilised in such a way that anticipating when required by
interpreter for communicating essential information about patient health to family members or
other medical professional. I will develop learning attitude in order to increase my knowledge on
medical field. I will also seek support , advice , suggestion , feedback from my colleagues,
supervisors , leaders and all other people surrounding me. As this activity will assist me
improving my abilities as well as performance within an enterprise. I will take person coaching
and seek support from my friends, colleagues and family members in order to improve my verbal
communication skills. I will also participate in training as well as learning session. As this will
support me in improving my practices and development of additional skills which will be
beneficial for my personal as well as professional development .I have decided that I will have
focus on identifying the techniques as well as innovative ways to maintain or improve my
performance within an enterprise(Colosio and et. al., 2017) By analysing several techniques, or
strategies which I can utilise for increasing the sustainability of my performance within an
organisation. I have decided that I will avoid multi tasking. As I have realised that multitasking
activities leads to compromise in quality of work which might have adverse effect on my
performance within a firm as well as negative impact on the health of patient. As I also believe
that this strategy will aid me in minimising errors or mistakes. I have also decided that I will
prepare daily schedule. As I perceive that this activity will help me in organising my in
systematic manner. It will also assist me in maintaining as well as enhancing quality of work. By
observing the qualities as well as skills of professional people those who are working with me in
an enterprise I have realised that focus or concentration is the significant characteristics that
make individual professional or expert in particular field. I have also decided that I will follow
strict discipline policy as well as regulation formed by manager in an organisation. As this
strategy or activity will assist me in my professional and personal development. I have designed
policy for myself that I will open for seeking feedback , advice or suggestion from my seniors
and also other people surrounding me. As this will support me in recognising the skills required
to be developed by me and recognising the performance gap. It will also help me in my personal
as well as professional growth. I have established small as well as long term targets that will help
me in recognising the reason for performance gap. It will also assist me in self assessment
procedure and also in comparing actual outcome with desired results. My future practices will

also involve becoming effective medical professional as well as proactive. I have also decided
that I will execute self assessment as well as reflective practices at regular interval of time. As I
believe that it will help in identifying my strength and weaknesses. I have planned to apply my
knowledge as well as skills gained by participating in training and other learning events. It will
support me in increasing my level of confidence and enhancing my performance within an
enterprise which is very much essential for fostering my personal as well as professional growth.
I have planned to apply my knowledge as well as skills gained by participating in training and
other learning events in my practices within in an organisation. I will also take high initiative to
support firm in increasing value and promoting principles.
