The comparative analysis aims at understanding the different changes in the character as
it passes through the transition phase between innocence and experience. The transition from
innocence to experience is being portrayed in the stories through the different experiences that
are gathered by the characters. On the other hand, the dependence of characters on the genders
and the relevanmt situations that are faced by the same added to the essence of the stories
marking their journey. In this connection, the stories HALF A DAY and Girl is considered for
the better understanding of the positions of the protagonists and the experience gained by the
same in their adolescent ages depending on the gender differences. The structure of the story and
the sequential role play is based on the identification of the different aspects of social doctrines
and discriminations.
The protagonist character of “HALF A DAY” shared his feelings relating to the first day
at school and the manner in which the life changed. The story delved deeper into understanding
the different experiences that are gathered by the protagonist while pursuing his school life. The
story critically examines the evolution of the protagonist as per the changes that were introduced
to the same and the maturity that is gained by the same through the experiences. The transition
phase from innocence to experience that was faced by the character through the evolution of the
events are being portrayed as a major part of the story. The protagonist’s character in a third
person view is more like a witness to the changes that occurred in his life since his father
introduced him to life and thereon the manner in which grayness surrounded him in every aspect.
The story represented adolescence in completely different manner where HALF A DAY
aimed at understanding the life of a boy in a society and the different changes that are
encountered by the same while growing up. The setting of HALF A DAY is based on the social
role that is played by the male member of the society through the different experiences that are

gathered by the same through an ever- changing life that ranged from adolescence to maturity.
Portrayal of innocence and adolescence as the male member attending school helps in
developing the role play of the protagonists.
The story “Girl” encircled around the different responsibilities that are meant to be
undertaken by a girl as per the expectations of the society. The story reflects on the social
bindings that are faced by the women in a male- dominated social structure. The delineation of
the roles that are required to be played by the protagonist in order to sustain in a society, which is
ruled by the expectations of the male candidates. The journey from innocence to experience was
reflected as per the social bindings and the duties that are to be performed by the girl child since
its childhood.
Girl exemplified the different values that are required to be induced in the women from
their very childhood. The instructions for leading life in a male dominated society and all the
constrains that might be faced by the women is portrayed. The reflection on adolescence
depended on the gender that is being considered as a part of the event in the story. The transition
phase thereby portrayed the evolution of the values that are inculcated in the girl since her
childhood.
Girl developed an insight on the different roles that are played by the women in the male
dominated social structure. Thereby the settings of the stories are based on the social
responsibilities that are played by the protagonists as per the gender differences. Girl portrayed
the manner in which the social norms and expectations are induced in female members to cope
up with a patriarchal societal structure.
