Part 1 – Interview
I had the opportunity to interview Andrew Joseph who was a young photographer and have
just passed high school. He has been in the photography profession since a very young age
for the last 5 years and now have started his own event planning company, Dreamlights.
This interview contains the journey of Andrew and how he was motivated to start his own
business at such a young age.
Student: Hi, Andrew, please explain to me your business.
Andrew Joseph: I had started Dreamlights last year which is an event planning company.
Initially I have started as a wedding planner as I have been a wedding photographer from the
last 5 years and have quite a good amount of knowledge in this field. I plan weddings as a
whole package which includes photography, catering, decoration and every other essentials
that are needed in a wedding.
Student: What inspired you to become a wedding planner from just a photographer?
Andrew Joseph: Since I am young, I had very friendly relations with the bride and the
groom I every wedding that I went to. Often it would happen that when I went for the
photography contract the bride or the groom would ask for my suggestion regarding the food
or the decorations and if I knew any right person for the following requirement. Since I am in
this field for a long time I know a quite good lot of people and I would suggest them to the
bride and the groom and they would be satisfied with the services. That is when it struck my
mind that rather than providing direct contacts I could start a wedding planning company
where I would provide a complete package of the wedding essentials so that the bride and
groom would not have to contact every person individually.
Student: How difficult has it been for you to initiate the start up?

Andrew Joseph: The initial issue was gathering the capital for the start-up which I was able
to borrow from a relative after much persuasion since my parent did not give me any but did
give me their full support in times of moral support which was enough for me. After the
initiation the easiest part was to gather the necessary contacts as I knew a lot of people from
my work as a photographer. However, it has been really hard since as planning a wedding is
not an easy task and especially at my age. However, with the help of the experienced people
who are on my team I gave been able to successfully do my work ad make the brides and the
grooms happy without services.
Student: Is there something you would like to share with our young future entrepreneurs?
Andrew Joseph: I first want everyone to remember the famous quote that age is just a
number. Never lose trust in yourself and always believe that you can achieve anything that
you desire with your heart and soul even if you are young. It does not matter if you are far
away from understanding the concept of wedding like me, but if your understand the practical
things that needs to be done then there is nothing that can stop you. The most important thing
is to know everything about the field that you want to start your business along with the
confidence that you can do it. Only then would you be able to successfully start a venture of
your own.

1. Introduction
The interview that conducted with Andrew Joseph states the venture that was taken by
him and how it pushed an individual who has just graduated from high school to start an
event planning business. This report contains a discussion about the concepts of entrepreneur
and entrepreneurship and discusses on the impact that this interview has on the project and
the career followed by a conclusion.
2. Discussion
2.1 Concept of entrepreneur and entrepreneurship
The inception of the word entrepreneur has been from the French word entreprendre
which means to undertake. An entrepreneur is seen as a person who starts a business or more
known as an enterprise. He possesses the required skills to start their own business and
focuses on the development of different goals which would help him to grow the business
and finally reach a high place. He develops ideas which would be beneficial for the people
and aims to create changes in the organisation for its good. In a simpler context,
entrepreneurs are the people who search for a change and if they see an opportunity focuses
on exploiting and using the opportunity (Poschke, 2013). Certain characteristics must be
possessed by an entrepreneur to achieve success in his ventures. Firstly, they should be a
creative and innovative person who can develop new ideas which no other person have
attempted to do before. This is because the people are attracted to new things and developing
an idea which might be liked by the people. Secondly, they must be confident and determined
so that they are successful in their start-up. If they do not have confidence over his ability or
the idea that he has incurred, then he will not be able to work to the best of his abilities and
hence might not succeed (Scarborough, 2016).

Thirdly, the entrepreneur must be a risk taker without taking calculated risks it is
impossible to move forward with the business. Nothing can be achieved if the business is
operated cautiously without taking steps which might be stipulated as risks at the time.
Fourthly, the entrepreneur must be able to make changes according to changes that occur in
the market or the industry that he is operating in. He has to change himself according to the
trends of the market. Certain advantages and disadvantages are present in being an
entrepreneur (Levine & Rubinstein, 2013). The advantages are as follows. The entrepreneur
has the freedom to operate as he sees fit without having to take orders from anyone to work
according to the instructions if others and therefore the whole success or the failure of the
business is on him and he can take his own decisions. They will create challenges for
themselves or take up the ones that are prevalent in the market and work towards their
betterment in the way that they are comfortable in. Entrepreneurs create their remuneration
for the work that they are doing and for the product or service that he is offering. Hence, he
will be getting the exact amount that is appropriate for their product. They are in control of
their actions and will be able to work on their schedule without having to answer to anyone
else like for employees.
Subsequently, there are also several disadvantages to being an entrepreneur. They
have to dedicate a lot of time to their business. Even if they are in control of their own
business, they have to invest more time in the business than the employees have to for their
work. This is because the whole enterprise depends on the decisions of the entrepreneur and
if he is not committed enough to the business, then it will fail. They have to compete with the
other business in the industry. To ensure that he does not get overrun by his competition he
would have to make conscious choices which will help him to gain a competitive edge over
other companies and beat them. Being an entrepreneur also introduces various work timing
which is unpredictable (Gill & Larson, 2014). Like employees, an entrepreneur does not have

a fixed time for his work and works till the time it is necessary even if it requires the whole
day. There is no day and night time for the entrepreneur, and he has to put the most effort that
he can to get the desired results. The major disadvantage of being an entrepreneur is that even
after the hard work that he would put into the business, it might not succeed due to several
unforeseen reasons in the ever-changing market and hence the entrepreneur has to always
keep in his mind before starting a venture that there are chances that it might fail.
Entrepreneurship is the desire and the capacity that is possessed by an entrepreneur to
start a business venture and manage it along with several risks that he might have to take to
get the desired outcome that he has set for his business and also incur profit. The concept of
entrepreneurship is explained along with risks and profit both of which is the part of the
actions of the entrepreneur. Entrepreneurship as a concept contributes majorly to the
development of the economy. It gives employment to a lot of unemployed people as the
starting of a new business would require a workforce for doing the required jobs (Kirzner,
2015). It ensures that the resources of the country that it is operating in is being mobilised in
the right manner. These resources include human resources and capital resources which are
two of the most important resources that are needed for a business. It also promotes trade of
export in the country which is a major reason behind the development of the country’s
economy where it is located. Therefore entrepreneurship is the process of the managing the
venture that is started by the entrepreneur in his way.
2.2 Impact of the interview on the project and career
The interview that was conducted with Andrew Joseph had a great impact on the
project and the thoughts that were present regarding the future of the career that was about to
be taken. The interviewee portrayed a strong character even though he was young. He was
not afraid to start adventure about a service that is quite difficult to understand at the age he is
in. However, taking the help of his experience and his practical knowledge of the field he

went to start his own business without thinking about the fact that he might fail drastically.
He did not let failure stop him from doing what he wanted to do. In the same way it very
important that no matter what the difficulties that might appear in the project currently or for
the career in the future it is important that both should be pursued without any fear of failure
and the best effort should be given so that it is a success. However, the correct measures
should be taken, and any step that is taken should be done with extreme thought and by
conducting various researches and gaining insights of the possibilities that might occur if the
step is taken (Kuratko, 2016). Even though it is important to take risks to move forward, the
risks should be calculated and not on a whim, so that the project might be successful and
receive the desired outcome that was stipulated at the beginning.
3. Conclusion
Hence, it can be concluded from the above study that a person can strive to become an
entrepreneur if he possesses the right skills and the right thought process to do so. Being an
entrepreneur is not just to start a new venture, it is to start a venture with an innovative idea
which might be accepted by the people so that it can become successful in the long run.
Moreover, an entrepreneur needs to possess special qualities which might lead him to
contribute to the success of his business.
