Depression among Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender and
Intersex people-LGBTI in Australia
Introduction
According to WHO, depression currently affects more than 264 million
persons (WHO, online). It is further estimated that about 800, 000 persons
globally die from suicide-related depression; characteristically it is the second
leading mortality cause among youth aged 15-29 years. According to CDC, the
exact mechanisms of depression are unknown; however, it is thought to be
linked to a combination of factors such as biological, genetic, environmental and
psychosocial aspects (CDC, Online). Further, depression affects an estimate of 1
out of every 6 adults at some point in time and can happen at any age or
individual characteristics. Majority of the person experiencing depression have
been shown to have also mental conditions which are a key public health
concern. Moreover, depression accompanies anxiety disorders, which enables
people to have extreme struggle with self, uncontrollable anxiety feelings, worry,
panic and fear (GBD, 2017). Combined, these aspects interfere with daily
activities of life making depression the leading cause of disability according to
WHO data documented in 2012.
Depression issues among LGBTI in Australia
In Australia, it is estimated that about 45% of the population are
experiencing mental conditions in their lifetime. About 1 million Australian adults
have depression yearly while over 2 million people are experiencing anxiety.
Among the general population, 15% experience depression which is equivalent
to 2.83 million people currently. In the year 2017-2018, about one in eight
representing 13% of Australians aged above 18 years experienced some level of
psychosocial distress which is an increase from the year 2014-2015-11.7%
(Skerrett, Kõlves & De Leo, 2015).
Among the LGBTI, studies have shown that they score higher at 19.6 versus
14.5 compared to the general Australian population to face psychological
distress based on the K10 scale. One in five lesbian, gay and bisexual Australians
are having depression which is about triple compared to the heterosexual
Australians. In this, about 19.2% homosexual, and bisexual aged between 16 and
85 have experienced an affective state in the last any one year. This is about
