Introduction
Guy’s and St Thomas is London’s most famous teaching hospitals that provide patients excellent
care and treatment from two central London sites near London Bridge and Waterloo. They
provide hospital services to local communities. They have integrated community services in
Southwark and Lambeth into the trust (Sills, 2019).
They also provide specialist services to patients from further afield, including kidney, cardiac,
cancer, women’s and orthopedics services. They are also known as a home of Evelina London
Children’s Hospital (Dodds, 2018). This hospital has well-established multi-award winning
sustainability program like a driver of efficiency, enhancing quality, reducing waste, and is a
clear leader in the NHS.
This organization has the aim to lead the sector of healthcare over the next few years. This will
also work with others to encourage a wider consistency in delivering sustainable healthcare.
Regulations and policies regarding sustainability following have been covered in the following
discussion.
Sustainability following regulations and policies
This program of sustainability contributes to the wider trust community. This support such
measures such as improved local quality of air, local procurement, and local employment.
Environment
According to the Intergovernmental panel on climate change as the world is getting warmer.
Global warming is a consequence of climate change caused by activities of human such as
burning fossil fuels (Saleh, 2014). This organization is committed to reducing the emissions of

carbon in its operations and encouraging users to use the mode of sustainable transport that will
reduce the traffic congestion and emissions of carbon for improving the quality of air.
To improve the quality of air, reduce costs and harm, the organization has begun a program to
promote the cleaner air that involves:
Monitoring pollutants and quality of air (Specifically PM2.5)
By reducing the sources of pollutions on-site through staff empowerment, driver training, and
requirements of the stringent contractor. By advising the susceptible patients to introduce their
exposure to air pollutants.
Helping to establish an arrangement to inspire the uptake of electric vehicles by installing
rechargeable sockets at Guy’s and St Thomas Hospitals.
This organization is committed to improving the quality of air, mitigating change of climate,
minimizing of pollution, and the associated adverse effects of health.
Environmental considerations

To deliver an effective service lowest emission the contractor should provide electrical vehicles
as the preferred option (Ogundimu & Sullivan, 2017).
At all the time, the contractor must follow the “No Idling” policy.
The contractor should provide the operations, reports, and updates of transport to reducing the
emissions.
Environmentally friendly driving to all driver should be provided by the contractor and must be
able to demonstrate the compliance of the driver.
The process of measuring on mitigation, the adaption of climate change and sustainable
development including performance against the carbon reduction management plans.
Waste minimization and resource efficiency
There should be a proper arrangement to minimize the waste in the operations and services of the
hospital.
Evidence of awareness of, and compliance with relevant waste legislation relating to waste of
hospital equipment and storage of accessories and disposal (Sushant, 2011).
Targets and objectives in place for future reductions in recycling rates and waste status and
details of significant waste initiatives of minimization.
Getting the right food with the best possible nutrition

compliant can be traced. Food is available 24 hours a day to patients.

be monitored to ensure (Sonnino, 2011). In medical conditions, a range of therapeutic meals and
diet will be provided. There is a facility of a pantry for nursing staff to prepare food.

There are up to date procedures and policies for ensuring hygiene practices and food safety.
There are also best practices and codes of practices within the organization for serving the best
quality.
Audit and schedule of inspection are executed and implemented in all venues of food within the
organization (Ramphal, 2014). Accurately reporting and prioritizing audits and inspections
reporting and non-conformance on a basis of risk.
Producing accurate, detailed, and precise reports. Undertaking detailed investigations into
incidents and complaints in a timely manner.
Innovation at an Organizational level
Workplace planning with innovation is an integral part of system management, strategic plans,

Recruitment and retention
There are plans in place to reduce the rate of vacancy particularly in specialist roles of nursing to
monitor progress against these with the impact of the high cost of London (Port, 2016).
They are also developing a nursing retention strategy for supporting nurses. The organization
will expand the strategy to another group of staffs to reduce the rate of turnover.
Safe staffing
The organization also reviews the level of staffing that increased the activity because they are

Protected mealtime are embedded within the organization and allow nursing staff to be involved
in the whole meal service, delivery during dinner and lunch by ensuring patients are ready to eat.
Ensuring the environment encourages eating. Monitoring, observing mealtime, and assessment.
Identified the patients who require more support and assist them. Ensuring that patients are ready
to eat.
Mealtime co-coordinator for each ward area will be provided. There should be a policy of
communication aid will be used at each mealtime to list special dietary requirements, who need
assistance with feeding, and the daily named mealtime coordinator.
Patients who need more assistance with the drinking and eating can be shifted in the red trays
and traffic light trays ward. There should be a procedure for assistance with special diets or
eating for recording in the nutritional care plan of patient’s.
Improving quality and reducing the variation
An organization can improve the system of order and procurement through the partnership at a
commercial level. The organization can work with the providers to develop an approach of the
network to improve orthopedic services.
The organization can rebuild its department of emergency through the work of transformation.

Trust.

dashboard. By reducing the variation, duplication and manage demand more effectively across
pathways.
