Three most important environmental sustainability challenges faced by BHP in the current
situation is described below:
a) Pollution: This is the one of the major challenge that used to affect the market which
is caused by using of plastics, heavy metals and toxic gases (Saxena and et.al., 2019). As BHP
used to do operate in mining, metals and petroleum so this is the big challenge that the company
faces in the current situation.
b) Global warming: This is refers to the heating of the Earth's climatic condition that is
mostly one in industrial areas due to human activities. BHP is the multinational mining and metal
operating company which makes them to face the problem related global warming and affect the
profitability. This may make the company to come in trouble by having the effect the atmosphere
which lead to have the climatic changes.
c) Waste disposal: waste disposal includes the collection, process and recycling of the
waste in human society (Martínez-Martínez and et.al., 2019). As the cited organization is the
multinational Plc. Which used to face the problem related to the disposal of the waste in the
market.
These are the big issues that the company used to face as it is very important for the
company to have the proper waste management which helps to have less pollution in the market.
This will make the company to have good profitability in the market.
2.
The environmental challenges that used to pose the threat to company, country and globally is
described below:
a) Pollution: The major threat to the company as it affects the market and reduces the
renewable energy to the cited organization (Orzes and Sarkis, 2019). As by increase in the
pollution it used to affect the country atmosphere and lead to increase in the global warming.
Increase in the pollution by the cited organization will lead to affect the reputation of the
company in the global market.
b) Waste disposal- if an excessive amount of waste is produced by the company and
dumped in the water then it will create harmful effects to human beings, nature, as well as
surrounding area (Ögmundarson and et.al., 2020). These waste is dangerous for the health of
people which can impact their physical illness. If the company is not able to maintain

sustainability and manage waste disposal then it will impact the brand image and reputation of
employees working in the company. Also, it will impact productivity and performance of the
firm. So, BHP incl San macro Brazil is focusing on these factors and challenges overcoming
with any uncertainty in the future.

Government environmental planning policies
As we all know that environmental resources' competition is growing day by day with
climate change (Jeswani, Chilvers and Azapagic, 2020). To deal with this BHP has a basic role
to play as a leader in the market by using its leadership approach in responding to these global
challenges. The environmental planning policies of the BHP company is to operate in such a way
that it can have significant environmental impacts. By applying planning policies related to
environment the company is maintaining access to resources of nature (Oláh and et.al., 2020).
Minimizing environmental impacts is the basic goal of the company which helps them to
mitigate adverse impacts of environmental factors at every stage in the life cycle of business
operational activities. The company major aim is to minimize their business operations impact on
land and biodiversity to protect nature. The company BHP is focusing on reducing harmful
effects of human activities to maintain sustainability. Policies addressing air and water pollution,
land management, conservation, chemical and smog policies requires more attention. The reason
behind that is to ensure that continue environment management takes place and tackling risk
related to environment to maintain eco-friendly business planning. Plus, they need to enhance the
project evaluation cycle without affect the atmosphere surrounding them.
4.
The comparison between the Australia's environmental management policies and practices with
BHP's government is as described below:
The environment protection and conservation in Australia is the central piece of the
legislation related to environment (Saxena, and et.al., 2019). These policies helps the country to
have conservation and protection of the environment by having proper disposal of waste, create
the pollution environment and reduces the global warming in the country. The country also
focuses on the policies related to the air pollution, chemicals and oils spills, land conservation
management etc.

On the other hand, BHP environmental management policies is to avoid business
activities and design its business planning in such a manner that it does not impact the
environment. The company says that they respect the legally designated areas which has been
protected by the government to maintain sustainability. Plus, the company follows policy in
which they do not explore within the world heritage listed properties boundaries and also focus
on managing the affects of environmental factors while working on projects.
5.
The selected environmental issues such as pollution, global warming and waste disposal
have a severe sustainability impact on the health, wealth as well as economic development of
different stakeholders such as customers, employees, suppliers etc. Because of the excessive
pollution being generated from mining and other extraction processes in BHP and San macro
Brazil, the employees along with the nearby residents might have severe health effects including
respiratory and cardiovascular disease, injuries and premature deaths. In addition to this, the
operations related to mining and petroleum products and disposal of waste impact the local
geographical climate and surroundings and contributes significantly towards the extreme weather
events that is global warming (Stephenson and et.al, 2015). It also deviates the occurrence and
topographical dispersal of food and water borne illnesses and many other infectious diseases
which might act as a threat to the mental health of the employees and communities living in the
neighbourhood. Other than this, Natural resources are the essential inputs for production in the
sector in which BHP and San macro Brazil operates and consumption and production results into
pollution as well as other pressure on the environment. In turn, the poor environmental quality
impacts the economic growth along with well-being through dropping down of the quality as
well as quantity of resources.
