Description of Student Cohort: The students belong to an inclusive classroom in an
Australian school’s early education setting, grade 2. The demographic of the students
are unequally divided with Aboriginal and torres strait islander children forming the
minority, yet a significantly large enough number with 36% of the class strength.
Learning and Assessment Focus:
Curriculum Content Descriptions:
The English curriculum for year 2 according to the Australian Curriculum is focused on
the holistic development of language, literature and literacy skills. This curriculum
encourages the students to communicate with peers, teachers, students from other
classes as well as members of the community. The curriculum incorporates a variety of
texts and resources that the children read for enjoyment as well as education. The books
include multiple traditional oral texts, picture books as well as printed and digital stories
and chapters, verses, poetry etc. Special focus is given on the aboriginal and Torres
strait islanders of Australia.
The language aspect of the curriculum focuses on language variation and change, use of
language for interaction, text structure and organisation, idea development and
expression and word and phonic knowledge.
The literature aspect of the curriculum focuses on developing the child’s skills in
literature, a story context, literature response, examination as well as creation
The literacy aspect of the curriculum focuses on developing the child’s interactive
abilities with others while focusing on the aspect of literacy development by using
connecting words to build a small sentence while working in groups.
Overall, the curriculum for 2nd grade is a well defined, well organised and structurally
sound framework for the children to ensure their holistic development in English
language, literature and literacy skills, which are globally identified as key mediators of
complete educational achievements.
Learning Intentions (objectives): Students are learning to:
Describe words and sentences
Demonstrate the ability to connect words with sentences and identify which
words go with which sentences.
Understand the principles behind using a certain word in a certain context with its
proper pronunciation (e.g. I lost my BAT, vs I BET you that you will lose the game)
Connect words with pictures.
Success Criteria (assessment): Students will:
Learn how to interpret a pre-built story.
Learn how to develop a story on their own based on what resources and materials
they have been provided
Develop content with material support from the environment.

Description of Learning Activity (several paragraphs):
Several pictures from magazines or downloaded and printed from the internet will be given to
the students. The students will also be provided with a series of cards that contain texts in
correlation to the pictures. The text will have comprehensive structure but will also have
blanks in between which the student has to fill with words that are provided to him in a chart.
