2ERIKSON’S EIGHT STAGES OF PSYCHOSOCIAL DEVELOPMENTIntroductionI am a regular Nigerian man who has grown up with a good set of values in the town ofEpe, Lagos. I have had48 years of a comfortable and interesting life. I am presently married to abeautiful woman and we have four wonderful daughters aged 18, 16, 14 and 6 years respectively.I have been gifted with a magnificent set of parents who have given their best to raise me well. However I did have to face certain difficulties in my developmental stages because of certainindifferent ideologies that traditional Nigerians have when it comes to dealing with children, butall of that has helped shape me as the individual I am today. Erik Erikson was greatly influencedby Freud and in 1959 he proposed a psychosocial theory of development, encompassing theentire life of a person. His theory consists of 8 stages of development. The following essay isabout the comparison of experiences from my childhood, past and the present experiences withthe eight psychosocial developmental stages put forward by Erikson.Discussion Trust vs. Mistrust (0- 1.5 years).................X...............................................................................................TrustMistrustAccording to Erikson the first crisis in psychosocial development takes place in the firstyear of birth. At this stage the infants are filled with feelings of uncertainty about the world. They look up to their mothers or primary care givers for consistency, reliability and a stableamount of care which in turn helps them to develop a sense of trust about their surroundings(McLeod, 2013). This feeling of trust would eventually be carried by them in to their futurerelationships and they would have the ability to feel secure even in times of crisis. In case of

I am a confident man and I believe that there can be solutions to any problems orobstacles. The information that my family gives me suggests that I was a wholesome baby andwas fed well, I had the constant presence of my mother and that is where I get the sense ofsecurity and confidence from. These are the reasons why I placed myself at that point in the scaleAutonomy vs. Shame (1.5 – 3 years)...............................X................................................................................AutonomyShameThis next stage is where the child begins to develop more while slowly moving towardsindependent behavior. The children discover in this stage about their new found abilities to picktheir own toys, move on their own, and choose their own clothes. This is a crucial stage, thesuccessful completion of which leads to the virtue of will in the child and the failure leads in lackof self-esteem (McLeod, 2013). It is essential to support and encourage the children about theirindependent behavior so that they could become more confident and secure in the world. If thechildren in this stage are over criticized or controlled, they might begin to feel inadequate andthat would weaken their ability to survive in the world without being dependent. A carefulbalance needs to be struck for the child to become a well-adjusted human (Cherry, 2015). I feellike my parents helped me pass this stage successfully. Although I’m a slightly controllingperson and that maybe because according to the information from my relatives, my parentswere particularly strict during my potty training. Otherwise I am a well adjusted individual andmy parents supported a lot of my independent behavior and were very much proud of me. Myclose relatives tell me that my mother would let me pick out my own clothes and get me to eat
