Electrotherapy: Impact on Skin and Advantages and Disadvantages_2

Introduction
The usage of electric energy like a medical treatment is referred to as electrotherapy. This
term is being applied to wide range of alternative medical devices as well as treatments.
Generally, it implies treatment of disease through the usage of application of electric current for
peculiar parts of the body (Greenbaum, Schuster and Koifman, 2019). These processes are
widely within treatment of skin to eradicate marks of pimples, permanents marks, scars etc. This
essay will provide an insight into electrotherapy, their impact on skin along with their advantages
and disadvantages.
Main Body
Electrotherapy which is utilised for different beauty treatments is denoted cosmetic
electrotherapy. Here, low currents are being passed via skin for producing huge therapeutic
effects like micro-lifting of face or muscle toning in body. The usage of electricity within
cosmetics has been started from 19th century after Luigi Galvani found that electricity can be
utilised to twitch the leg of frog. There major four kinds of treatment which differ from each
other on the basis current which is being used in them. They are: galvanic treatment,
neuromuscular electric simulation, micro-current electric neuromuscular simulation and high
frequency treatment (Imran, 2019). Galvanic treatment is used since 1970 which treats skin via
two method, first is cleansing (process named desincrustation) and other is nourishing skin
conditions through electro-chemical process (ionisation or iontophoresis). In this case, direct
current is being used.
Faradic treatment is liable for toning muscles through repeatedly contracting with electric
current those results within firming, toning as well as enhancement within muscular metabolism
that aims at removing waste products. This is generally used on face as well as body.
Microcurrent treatment makes use of micro-ampere currents that are hardly perceptible but are
liable for mimicking body bio-electric currents. They are used by beauty therapist to soften
wrinkles, rejuvenate skin along with treating skin that is damaged like acne, stretch marks,
scarring, cellulite and sunburn. Here, different frequencies are used for treating different skin
problems (Harris and et. al, 2019). High frequency treatment makes use of low-current high-
frquency alternating currents which are being transmitted via glass electrode as they convert
