STREP THROAT2Strep ThroatIntroductionThere are different causes and risk factors for diseases. For instance, most of the non-communicable diseases are mainly related to lifestyle factors such as poor diet and physical inactivity. Infectious diseases on the other hand are caused by pathogenic microorganisms (Murray, Rosenthal and Pfaller, 2015). These include bacteria, fungi and viruses. In this essayone of the bacterial infections, strep throat will be discussed. Strep throat is caused by group A streptococcus bacteria (McMurray and Garber, 2015). This infection mainly manifests as pain and inflammation in the throat. This infection is not life threatening but could cause some serious complications if left untreated. While it mainly affects children between 5 to 15 years, it can affect persons of all ages across the population. Since this is a bacterial infection,it can be passed from one person to another through such means as coughing and sneezing (Walker et al, 2014). This essay is going to focus on this infection. Specifically, the followingwill be addressed: the symptoms and complications, ways in which it can be spread and strategies for preventing the spread of the condition.Symptoms and Complications of Strep Throat.There are several symptoms that a person with strep throat may have. One of these is aching of the throat. This has been identified as the most common and most prevalent symptom among persons with strep throat infection. One feels some itch at the rear of the throat. Due to this pain, a person who is having this condition may find it extremely hard to swallow or talk loudly. This is the most common sign of strep throat. However, it is not advisable for a person to self-diagnose themselves as having strep throat if they exhibit the symptom. This is because it could be caused by conditions other than strep throat.

STREP THROAT3Another common symptom is redness and swelling of the tonsils. This occurs when the infection spreads to the tonsils and it is possible for the condition to be confused with tonsillitis. In addition, there may also be yellowish or white spots. To distinguish the condition from any other in case of doubt, a doctor may perform a strep test to determine whether there is presence of streptococcus (Avery, 2015). The infection is also characterized by swollen lymph nodes of the neck. This may make the neck lumpy and is usually an indication that the infection has greatly spread. Another symptom that is common for strep throat is fever. Unlike other fevers, this one usually is of sudden onset and may not cause chills. It is risky to go for self prescription in case this happens as one might take antivirals instead of antibiotics (Santos, Alerhand and Koyfman, 2015). This could have side effects.Some other symptom includes stomach ache and vomiting. These are more common in children. They usually appear after the infection has advanced and so it is easy to differentiatethem from conditions of gastric origin. Stomach ache and vomiting are not common signs. Head aches and fatigue is yet another symptom. Most patients suffering from strep throat complain of having a persistent head ache combined with feeling ill and generally fatigued. Taking a healthy diet and consuming adequate amounts of water can help reduce eradicate these symptoms within a few days. Another symptom could be skin rash. This is mainly observed in the younger persons (children) and the elderly. The possible reason behind this is their weak immune systems. The streptococcus bacteria may cause allergic reactions which are responsible for the skin rashes (Finkelstein et al, 2017). There is also painful swallowing that makes it challenging to consume food or drinks. This could lead to dehydration. To avoidthis, food could be modified to be in a smooth consistency. Gentle fluids and other drinks such as herbal tea could also be taken to avoid dehydration. There could also be muscle pain. This is especially in the neck muscles.
