Identify and Produce Estimated Costs for Building and Construction Projects
This task involves describing, measuring and recording quantities of different trades for the
cottage project, including 10% wastage.
1. Bored excavation
Let spacing of piers be 1.8m (maximum allowable spacing between piers).
Total number of piers (considering that there is a pier at each corner of the building) = 53
Diameter of pier = 0.3m, depth of pier = 2.5m
Volume of pier = πr2 x h
Item Particulars Unit Qnty Rate ($) Cost ($)
1 Bored excavation for piers m3 9
π/0.152/2.5/53 9.37
2. Bulk excavation
Bulk excavation is done 1m beyond the external house walls and it does not include detailed
excavation. This is done by determining the bulk excavation for each ground floor room. Depth
of bulk excavation is 0.25m.

The contours and elevations shown on the project drawings have revealed that the site is not
level. This means that some of the excavated material will be used as fill material. Since the
contours on the site are in the range of 0.05 and 0.3, the percentage of materials from bulk
excavation that will be used as fill material is 50%. Thus the volume of fill material is equal to:
50
100 x 67 m3=33.5m3

3. Ground slab N25 concrete
The concrete calculated here is that for ground slab, beams, patio slab, and pad footings.
Ground floor slab
Thickness of ground floor slab = 0.1m
Volume of ground floor slab concrete = length x width x depth
Beams
There are edge beams and internal beams.
Depth of edge beams = 0.42m
Depth of internal beams = 0.35m
Volume of beams concrete = width x depth x length x no. of beams
Patio slab
Thickness of patio slab = 0.1m
Volume of patio slab concrete = length x width x depth
Pad footings
Depth of pad footings = 0.45m
No. of pad footings = 2
Volume of patio footings concrete = length x width x depth x no.

4. Ground slabs SL72 reinforcing mesh
The first step is to determine the net ground area of family, kitchen, meals room, laundry, foyer,
study, living, dining, hallway, garage and patio.
Effective cover area per SL72 reinforcing mesh sheet = 5.8m x 2.2m = 12.76m2
