Ethical challenges that managed care has on health care industry
Health care cost has increased rapidly in the recent years due to an inflationary reimbursement
system, technological advances and the increasing patient expectations. This has led to growth of
managed care organizations that greatly attempts to control costs. (Bondeson & James,
2016)However, this managed care has come with so many ethical challenges which have
affected the health care industry. The ethical challenges are as follows; one of the ethical
challenges is the balancing of profit with serving and providing charity care. Nurses are few and
expensive to keep them, therefore. Health organization must balance their costs to keep them
open.
Another ethical problem in the managed care is wrestling with equal treatment and VIP treatment
for influential people. In healthcare facilities influential people will be allocated longer
consultation time and their care is always first-class. (Morrison, 2018)This is usually unfair to
the public as it shows a bad picture of lack of equality in the healthcare industry. Another
challenge is nurses fail to observe ethical morals when serving patients with lower financial
benefits. Nurses will tend not to provide proper services to patients who are perceived to have
minimal benefit and other nurses will put some patients in life support machines for several years
in order to benefit themselves. Another ethical challenge is the use of false advertising where
managed care usually advertises that it offers mental health services and yet it only offers brief
examination of the mental health condition which may be ineffective. (Barrett, Gail, Angus,
Leonard, & Andreas , Public Health Ethics: Cases Spanning the Globe)
Recommendations

by healthcare organizations investing scarce funds in sectors that are to be beneficial to a few
