Introduction
The following paper will focus on the story of Maureen Gudonis and Isaias Echevarria,
the usage of a six step framework to ensure ethical decision making and recommendations of
ethical care.
Discussion
Summary
The selected story revolves around Maureen Gudonis and Isaias Echevarria. Maureen is
an experienced occupational therapist with extensive knowledge and clinical proficiency who
has proven her professional excellence upon newly joining Essex Community Health Center
(ECHC). Upon recommendations by her close friend and Nurse Practitioners Daniela, Maureen
undertakes a session with Isaias, a 13 year old who is inflicted with immense pain after under
doing amputation below the knee. The ethical dilemma arose after Isaias admits to Maureen that
he secretly reverts to marijuana to relieve his pain, a fact which he had hidden from this mother.
As evident from this study, the key ethical dilemmas associated here are associated with Isaias’s
preferences, his mother’s ignorance and Dr. Horner’s political views (Doherty & Purtilo, 2015).
Three Healthcare Regulations, Rules, Laws
Taking insights from the story, industry-established standards of healthcare regulations or
laws which can be considered as relevant to the given story is the Code of Ethics for Physicians
and Health of the Community established by the American Medical Association (AMA), which
have been formulated to guide physicians on the ways in which they must conduct morally
correct behavior with patients as well as fellow health professionals. Of these, the three ethical
