Introduction
Professional ethics refer to the principles which helps in governing behaviour of the
person or the group within business environment. It helps in providing the rules that helps in
directing the actions of an individual within society (Aipc.net.au., 2019). The ethical
principles underpins the professional codes of the conduct and it is dependent on profession
of an individual. It helps in prescribing the required standards of the behaviour of the
members belonging to a particular profession (Boniolo & Sanchini, 2016). It helps in
providing the transparency and the certainty pertaining to the handling of affairs. It helps in
providing the supportive framework that can resist the pressure to act in an inappropriate
manner in relation to a particular situation. The principles of the ethical practice helps in the
area of the responsible decision making that can help in governing an organization in the
right path. The principles can serve as the enduring framework that can help in the process of
career development of a person. It helps in providing the leadership in the area of ethics
which helps in facilitating dialogue in relation to the ethical issues. This essay discusses
regarding whether it would be ethical for the clinician Jessica in going out on a date with the
former client called Edward G. This essay talks about the principles in relation to ethics
within counselling that can help in making the decision.
Discussion
The employment professionals have to refrain themselves from any kind of practice
which influences their performance in the improper manner. The employing organizations
can be said to be responsible for the information which is supplied by the representatives.
Ethics can help in determining the choices that are made by the people. In the arena of
counselling, ethics helps in underpinning nature and the course of the actions which are taken
by counsellor (Theaca.net.au., 2019). The professionals working in the sector of healthcare

are expected of behaving in the ethical manner. The counsellors have to act in best interest of
clients that can help in the promotion of the goals of the client (Sood & Gupta, 2018). It
helps in offering protection to rights of client that can help in minimizing the harm on the
society. The ethical codes helps in balancing power and it helps in taking care of the fact that
counsellor operates in a manner that can help in serving good of the clients. The duty of care
of the counsellor is primarily focussed on serving the demands of the clients. The counsellors
have to consider themselves in the event of making the ethical choices and at the same time
they have to serve the interest of the organization where they are serving. The counsellors
should have the ability of acknowledging all the facets of the practice and they should look at
the element of the ethics from that of the holistic perspective that can help in serving the
greater community (Chang, 2016). The counsellors should be aware of the policies, moral
codes along with the societal norms that can help in the functioning of the society.
Jessica P. who is licensed physician meets a former client by the name of Edward G.
within a party. According to the case study, she had seen the client ten years before during
the session of the single assessment in the event of working as the counsellor for that of
Employee Assistance Program. She was working for the company of the client. The nature of
party can be said to be public and Jessica does not have the liberty of notifying Edward about
the prior relationship of the client and the counsellor. The client was looking for help owing
to the grief issues that he was suffering from owing to the demise of his father. At the time of
the single session, the client said that at the time when he was fifteen years old he used to
maintain a good relationship with that of the counsellor. The client had been able to resolve
other kinds of the emotional issues at the time of the treatment. Edward had asked Jessica
whether she would go out on the date with the client.
Jessica should not go out on a date with Edward as it can be stated to be unethical on
the part of the counsellor. It violates the ethical principles that the counsellors are supposed to
