1EVENTS
Event refers to a significant thing that takes place that has an impact on the society. It
is indicative of a planned occasion that causes a gathering of the individuals in the society.
This essay discusses about the history of the event and the purpose of event tourism in the
present age. The essay talks about various sectors of events industry and the difference that
exists between the mega, hallmark, community events and the major events.
Canberra Balloon Spectacular is the name of hot air balloon festival that was held in
the lawn of Parliament House within Canberra. It was inaugurated in the year 1987 in
Australia where 50 hot air balloons were launched daily from the lawn. Floriade is the name
of an entertainment festival that was held within Canberra’s Commonwealth Park that had
display of the flowering bulbs having integrated sculptures (Clarke 2016). The purpose of the
events is to help people so that they can know about the cultural heritage of a place. It helps
in expanding the knowledge of the people.
Event tourism refers to professional practice along with a field of the academic study.
Event tourism can be said to be a form of the tourism where the content of events is related to
resources of place. The various kinds of tourism programs helps in attracting potential
visitors to a place.
Event tourism helps in creating employment for a country that creates the path for the
economic development of a place. The money that is gained from the tourism can be used for
developing infrastructure along with the services (Van Niekerk 2017). The money that is
gained from tourism is used for the development of education and for facilitating sanitation in
a place.
There are various kinds of sectors of the events industry like the business events,
festivals, community events, outdoor events, music events, sports events, charity events and
the wedding planning events. The events originate from the corporate sector, community

sector and the government that helps in serving the private needs of the people (Gibson and
Connell 2016). The events are conducted by the government of a place or by the various
businesses. The events are conducted so that it can help people in becoming aware about the
cultural traditions of a particular place. The events related to music and the sports helps
people in showing their talent in front of the world.
The various kinds of events like the corporate events and the family events. There are
different kinds of family events like the weddings, birthday events and the wedding
anniversaries. The various kinds of corporate events are conferences, seminars, trade shows,
business dinners and the golf events.
Mega events refer to the events of big dimension that are larger as compared to the
regular events. The effect of the mega event can be understood from the visitor attractiveness,
reach and the cost of an event. The mega events which are held in Australia are Mardi Gras
Festival, Sydney Festival and the Spring Racing Festival that are held in Australia.
Hallmark tourist events refer to the fairs, expositions, sporting and the cultural events
that have international status. It helps in providing host community with the opportunity of
securing high performance within that of tourism market place (Lundberg et al. 2017). An
example of hallmark tourist event of Australia is the Olympic Games that helps in drawing
people from across the world.
Major events are indicative of the events that helps in the generation of immediate
along with the long term benefit to a country. It helps in attracting a large number of the
international participants along with the spectators (Lund and Turris 2017). The major events
that are held in Australia are the Moomba Festival, Formula Grand Prix along with the
Fashion Week of Australia.

A community event is indicative of a planned gathering of 50 or more than 50 people.
It makes people access the public property as the event is generally held within the public
arena. An example of community event is Mission Australia Housing Community Event that
caters to the needs of the deprived population of Australia.
Mardi Gras Festival along with the Sydney Festival helps in attracting the visitors
from the interstate and the overseas that helps in contributing to the regional economy of
NSW.
The Moomba Festival helps in bringing about the socio-cultural change that can bring
about significant changes in the society with the help of the parades along with the floats
(Higgins-Desbiolles 2018). Floats have the annual theme that helps people in knowing about
the distinctive culture of a place.
The environmental enhancement can be brought about with the help of Mission
Australia Community Events that helps in making people aware about the effects of the
human activities on the environment.
Event tourism paves the path for the creation of employment opportunities that creates
economic development within a region. There are different sectors pertaining to events
industry like business events, community events, music events and the sports events.
