The Plot Summary of “Farewell to Cork”
The first section of the novel under the title of “Mrs. Dampster” broadly
defines the character of the protagonist and establishes his motivation to
explore and represent his own life in an interesting way to make it attractive
for the others. This section of the novel depicts his journey from an ordinary
person to the stature of the soldier by overstating his age. The culmination
part of this chapter depicts his inclination towards becoming a brave and
unattached soldier to serve the nation in the best possible way.
The thoughts and feelings that appeared in my mind
This section of the novel connected me to a very complex question related to
my own existence. Do I exist for society to become an acceptable part of it?
Or do I have a greater purpose attached to the life where I should listen to
my soul and follow the “age of magic” which was the driving force behind
some major decisions taken by Ramsay?
It is an eternal quest that bothers all of us. On a subconscious level, we all
are living for the others. We are living under tremendous pressure on the
customs of society. Ramsay’s decision to live a life of choice inspired me a
lot. While stating his reasons for picking up a life of choice, he captured
some of the popular culture ironies that are prevailing in our society even
today. For instance when he talks about the depiction of the village in mass
culture, according to him the authors and filmmakers are either painting the
pictures of simpletons and easy-going people while describing a village or
they are showing them barbaric and immoral creatures breaking the rules of
morality set by the society or the religion.
It was interesting for me to think about myself as a unit of contemporary
society which can be projected in multiple ways and quite surprisingly, my
existence in the society or my unsung contributions to abide by the civil
rules will not be considered at all.
