Exercise 1
Consider the circuit shown in the figure.
The cylinder rod starts extending when the valve M3 is actuated while the cylinder
is fully retracted. Also, once M3 is actuated, the rod extends then retracted and
stops. However, the cylinder rod cannot retract unless it fully extends first. In this
exercise you are asked to modify the circuit such that the cylinder retracts by either
being fully extended OR by actuating a valve M4, to be added to the circuit.
a. In the simulation software assigned by your instructor, open a new file named
FinalEx1_LastName_FirstName
b. Build the circuit using the components shown or their equivalents
c. Start the simulation by left clicking the start button circled here in red as
shown ( ).
d. Left click once on valve M3 when the cylinder is fully retracted.
e. Does the cylinder rod extends then retracts and stops as desired?
YES, when M3 is pressed, cylinder extends and retracts and stops.
f. Modify the circuit by adding any needed component such that
the cylinder rod retracts immediately upon actuating a valve M4 to be
added to the circuit
Figure 1 shows the modified circuit with M4 valve which when
actuated, retracts the cylinder immediately.
the cylinder rod still retracts as soon as it fully extends
Yes, Cylinder still fully extends and retracts
g. Set the opening of all flow control valves to 20%
h. Left click on M3 with the cylinder fully retracted and before it fully extends,
actuate valve M4
i. Does the cylinder retracts immediately as required?
YES, cylinder retracts immediately.
j. Take a screen shot of the working simulated circuit, copy and paste in the
word document
Simulated circuit is shown in figure 2
k. Save the simulation and word files(Hint: remember the key word “OR” in the problem statement)

Consider the figure shown.
a. In the simulation software assigned by your instructor, open a new file named
FinalEx2_LastName_FirstName
b. Build the circuit using the components shown or their equivalents
c. Start the simulation by left clicking the start button circled here in red as
shown ( ).
d. Set the opening of flow control valves as indicated on the figure. (F1 to 50%,
F2 and F3 to 10%)
e. With the cylinder fully retracted, left click once on valve M1
What happens to the cylinder rod?
Cylinder rod fully extends and stops.
f. With the cylinder fully extended, left click once on the same valve M1
What happen to the cylinder rod?
Cylinder rod fully retracts and stops.
g. What are the two valves that need to be actuated for the cylinder to extend?
Valve S1 and valve M1
h. What are the two valves that need to be actuated for the cylinder to retract?
Valve S2 and valve M1
i. Can the cylinder stop or retract mid-way before it is fully extended?
Why?
NO, M1 valve is operated manually and there is AND valve also
next in the circuit hence once more actuation would be needed
to retract it mid-way. In current circuit, the cylinder will either
be fully retracted or cylinder fully extended.
j. Take a screen shot of the working simulated circuit, copy and paste in the
word document
Simulated circuit is shown in figure 4.
k. Save the simulation and word files
