Mass Moment of Inertia PDF_1
Introduction
When a body rotates about an axis, the angular momentum can be changed by applying torque. The amount of
torque required to rotate the body and produce angular acceleration is directly proportional to the moment of
inertia of the body. Moment of inertia may be expressed in units of kilogram metre squared (kg·m2) in SI units.

The moment of inertia depends on how mass is distributed around an axis of rotation and will vary depending
on the chosen axis. For example, even though two wheels might have the exact same mass, the one that has
more of its mass distributed further away from the axis of rotation will have a larger mass moment of inertia
and will require more force to start/stop rotating.

Objective

To determine mass moment of inertia of a part using experimental method.
