Chapter 1: Introduction
Background of the study
ERP system is the acronym given to Enterprise Resource Planning. As the name suggests
ERP system, assist in essential business functions and processes including order and inventory
management, human resource, accounting, customer relationship management (CRM),
manufacturing processes, inspection and quality control and beyond. At the elementary level the
ERP software integrates all business functions and processes into one alone system with the
scope to streamline the information and process within the organization (ERP System 2019). A
shared database that is capable of supporting various functions performed by the business unit in
the central feature of ERP systems. On the grounds, this means employees working in different
divisions like accounting, production or sales can now depend on the same information for their
needs.
Back in 1990, Gartner coined the term ERP but the roots to ERP dated even back to
1960s. Back then, it was just applicable to inventory management and control in a
manufacturing industry (Hurbean and Fotache 2014). Now it is evolved to a much greater extent
by incorporating software developed by engineers into the equation.
Aims and objective of the Undertaken research
The objective and aim of the research under consideration are identified as follows:
 To identify the factors affecting ERP system adaptation.
 Comparison between a small and large organisation.
 To understand the need of ERP in modern day scenario.
