L3: Assignment - Family Roles
The roles of families with individuals have changed, due to the Individuals with Disabilities
Education Act (IDEA). Refer to the ‘HISTORY: Twenty-Five of Progress in Educating
Children with Disabilities Through IDEA’ pdf document to complete the following questions
in paragraph format:
1. What accomplishment of IDEA do you consider to be most significant? Why?
The most significant accomplishment of IDEA is the enforcement of education for
the children with disabilities along with their non-disabled peers rather than educating them
in separate schools (US Department of Education., 2005). This accomplishment seems to
be most significant because it helps in the inclusion of those children in the mainstream
education system. They are being taught the same course and materials as their non-
disabled peers. This establishes a mindset of inclusion. The discrimination against the
disabled needs to be addressed from the very root and their inclusion in the regular schools
are an important way to do that. Moreover, their inclusion also ensures that they develop
better social skills, learn how to adapt to new environments and deal with people. Other
students also learn to accept them as peers and be empathetic with them. Their mindset
also changes and in future when these students go for mainstream job scenarios, their
success rate increase.
2. What purpose of Public Law 94-142 do you consider to be most relevant? Why?
The Public Law 94-142 was introduced for several purposes. Among them the most
relevant is the protection of the rights of disabled children and their families (US
Department of Education., 2005). Rights are fundamental aspect of any human being and
these should be protected at any cost. With the protection of their rights, all the other
aspects including their educational rights and inclusion in the society are possible.
3. What early childhood accomplishment of IDEA do you consider to be most important?
Why?
The most important early childhood accomplishment of IDEA is the development
and application of Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs) so that the unique needs
and requirements of each and every disabled child from birth to 5years age, is met along
with their family’s needs (US Department of Education., 2005). This particularly important
as this ensures that the most vital time of the child’s development is constructive. Every
child has their different needs and it more true for children with disabilities. Thus, the
individualized services help the government to address these needs on a one to one basis
and more children are better prepared for their transition to the mainstream education.
4. What culturally relevant instructional principle of IDEA do you consider to be most current?
Why?
Among the culturally relevant instructional principle of IDEA, the most current
seems to be the creation of classroom environments where the differences in the diverse
cultural heritage are reflected (US Department of Education., 2005). These classrooms also
include diverse style of communication and learning based on the cultural heritage. This
seems to be the most current principle as consideration of cultural communication,
consideration of their impact on the children has developed relatively later. The other
