FOOD RETAILING
Task 1
Structure and size of food retailing sector
In any organization, the structure of the business and the size of the sector is one of the most
crucial and effective factors that should be concerned with the management of that particular
organization. Food retailing sector being one of the most important industries it also has a
large dependency upon the structure and the size of the retailing sector. Both the structure and
the size of the retailing sector deals with certain specific factors such as the area in which the
business is operating, the scale of the business, the number of consumers they are getting,
how many shops and outlets they are running and what food they are serving to their
customers. These are the factors that decide the structure and the size of the food retailing
sector nowadays (Smith and Trant, 2003). There are much different food retailing sector that
is providing different types of foods to the consumers such as KFC, McDonald's, Tesco and
many other. For example, KFC is one of the most renowned and successful food retailing
sector. They have their branches and stores in all over the world. They mainly serve chicken
items. The number of consumers that they are getting is also huge. From various surveys, it is
quite confirmed that their annual turnover is amongst the best of the world. Thus it can easily
be said that the structure and size of the mentioned organization are very much impressive.
To be more précised, the food retailing industry being one of the rapid growing sectors, they
are naturally giving more concern to the structure and size of their business. The outlets and
the decoration of the stores also fall in this category. The first thing that the company should
do is to attract as many people as possible. For that, they have to provide something unique
and pictorial to their customers (Arnold, 2000). In all, it must be admitted that the structure
and size of the food retailing sector plays a vital role in the development of the mentioned
industry as a whole.

Product types of food retailing sector
There are many types of retailers in the food industry such as the grocery stores, drink corner,
supermarkets, warehouse retailers, specialty retailer, online retailers, fast food centres,
restaurants and many others. Each and every retailer has their system and specialty of serving
food to their customer. People visit each kind of the retailers according to their need of food.
For example grocery stores and supermarkets are the most used retailers because they serve
the product which is needed by every family. The type of the products determines the success
of any retailer. On the other hand, the fast food centres are also one of the most visited
retailers of the food industry. Nowadays the youth is very much attracted to the fast foods
such as pizza, chicken items and many other. These fast food retailers serve some delicious
and widely accepted foods to their consumers (Arnold, 2000). The conventional supermarkets
serve food for everyday use. Thus this kind of retailers is also visited frequently by the
consumers. Other than the types of the product there is another factor that determines the
success and the failure of the retailing sector that is the pricing strategy of that particular
retailer. The most effective way to attract more customers is by offering them a good product
at a low range. These are the basic factors that hugely affects the food retailing sectors
whether it is large scale or small scale. Thus the structure and size, as well as the product type
and its range, plays an important role in the growing of the food retailing industry.
Task 2
Impact of development in consumer market on food retailing
Today, when every industry is developing their business strategies, internal factors and
consumer market, food retailing being one of the most important industry, they are naturally
improving their consumer market (Belasco and Scranton, 2002). These developments are
obviously affecting the retailers as a whole. The retailers are investing more money to buy the
better quality product. They are getting better stakeholders, and they are buying the better

quality product. As a result, the consumers are getting better products. This is one of the
prime examples of the impact of the development in the consumer market in the food
retailing sector. Besides these, there are many other impacts such as in the case of the online
retailers. The online retailers are providing better quality food items and are delivering it to
the customer faster than before. Another prime factor is the requirement and demand of the
customers. Whichever retailer it is, it must serve according to the expectation of the
customers. This will enable them to get more consumers (Dani, 2005). If the customers do
not get the food that they are looking for, they would never visit that particular retailer ever
again. Thus it is so much important for the retailers to be aware of the needs and demands of
their target customers. Another factor that can determine the success and failure of the
industry is the accessibility of the customers. Food items are something that has a demand on
any time of the day. Most of the food retailers are keeping their shops open for much time
(Belasco and Scranton, 2002). This helps the customer to get food on anytime. This also falls
in the category of the development of consumer market. Thus it is quite clear from the above
passage that the development in the consumer market has a great and positive impact on the
food retailing industry.
Identification of the development in consumer market of food retailing
As mentioned in the above passage there has been a great and drastic change in the consumer
market. As compared to the market a few years back, the market that the industry is running
is quite modified, developed and improved. All this improvement has its impact on the
industry as a whole. It has also helped to build a nice communication between the consumers
and the retailers. The main and prime developments that have taken place in the consumer
market are the quality of the food, the service to the customers, the demands of the
customers, the accessibility of the customers and many other (Dani, 2005). The quality of the
foods is something that has a great effect on the then retailing sector. If the quality of the

foods is not up to the mark, the organization or the retailer would never be able to attract
more customers. But nowadays the retailers are investing more money into buy better quality
foods. The demand of the customers is something that is maintained by the industry in a
modified manner. The retailers have stronger analysis to know the demand of the customers,
and then they are providing food to their customers by their demands and expectation. The
modern retailers are now more concerned about the accessibility of the customers. The
customers are getting food on any time of the day. This helps the retailers to get more
customers and to spread their business on a large scale. Thus it is quite clear that the
development in the consumer market is affecting the food retailing industry hugely.
Task 3
Importance of safety and health in food retailing sector
Safety and health is a factor which is one of the prime factors for any organization and
industry, in particular for the food industry. If the safety factor is not up to the mark in the
food industry, the customers could be harmed which might cause a great loss in the industry
as well the particular retailer. Thus it is a must for any retailer to provide maximum safety
and security for the customers. For that, there are certain factors that the organization and the
industry should be concerned such as the cleanliness in the sorting of foods and packaging of
foods, the production procedure of the foods, the better quality food products, fresh meats
and fish and many others (Jordan and Persson, 2007). The retailers must be aware of the
cleanliness factor. If the workers and employees of the organization do not pay attention to
the cleanliness, the food can do harm to the customers who would not be good for both the
consumers as well as the retailers. Thus for the sake of the safety of the customers the
retailers and the employees must be clean and must maintain the cleanliness factor with
proper skill and guidelines. With the development of the consumer market, the food retailers
are also gaining many advantages related to the quality of the foods that the retailers are

offering. The retailers are now able to buy better quality foods as mentioned earlier. Other
than these there are also some basic guidelines that the retailers should follow to provide
safety to the customers like using fresh vegetables, meats, and fish. By not using any harmful
product in the foods. These are the main factor that the retailers should follow for the security
and safety of the customers (Jordan and Persson, 2007).
Impact of health, safety and hygiene legislations on food retailers
The prime target of any company is to attract as much as customers are possible which goes
same for the food industry. For that, the retailers have to provide everything that is needed for
the customer. One of that thing is safety and hygiene factor. The government has also
planned some legislation for the safety of the customers. There is legislation for each and
every sector of the food industry such as the organized food and the street food. The
legislations are planed nationally by the government but followed locally. The main
legislation is made for the safety of the customers. According to the legislation, the retailer
cannot use any harmful element in the foods and they also have to serve fresh and better
quality foods to the customers. The retailers also need to follow the Codex general principle
of food hygiene. This particular legislations can be made by local or the national authorities.
These legislations are usually applicable for every kind of foods like organized foods and
street foods, but sometimes there are different legislations for different sectors of foods.
Apart from these, there are also some one liner legislations that the company or the retailers
should always follow such as according to the legislation's the retailer can never sell any
misbranded or adulterated food to the customers, neither they can apply any risky and
unhygienic element to the foods (Kahn, 2006). If the retailers do not abide by these
legislations, their license can be cancelled by the national authority. Laboratory analysis must
be shown to the authority before releasing any new foods in the market. If the authority
approves the food and considers the food to be harmless, then the retailer can launch that

food item in the market. It is quite clear from the above legislations that the authority is
totally responsible for the hygiene and the safety factors of the customers.
Evaluation of the planning and assembling of the display
From the above passages, it is quite clear that the retailers all over the world are extremely
aware of the norms and the legislations made by the local or the national authority. Still, there
are also some retailers who are not following the mentioned points accordingly. Thus the
retailers who are not used to the mentioned points must follow all the legal legislations. Other
than these the retailers must have a strong analysis on the demands and the expectations of
the customers and then should proceed according to their needs. This will also help the
retailers to be successful in their business. Other than these factors another important factor
for the retailer of foods is the structure and size as well as the product type and price. The
retailers must have a strong market analysis before determining the price of the products of
the foods. If the structure and scale of the business are not wide, the retailers would never be
able to attract more customers. Thus they must increase the structure and the size of the food
retailing sectors (Kahn, 2006). All these mentioned points are very much useful for any food
retailing industry.

Task 4
Explain how food retailers are meeting their social, ethical, environmental and corporate
social responsibilities
Morison is one of the most successful companies to meet the social, ethical, and
environmental and CRR responsibilities within the organization. To understand the
techniques of meeting these impacts in the retail organizations, the food retail companies are
the most effective to focus on.
Social:
There are different social changes in the life of people while they are trying to meet work life
balance. In this way, people are taking foods at late and working till night to finish the work.
However, they don't get time to cook foods, in this way, Morison as a food retailer has taken
an initiative to provide foods with the innovation of readymade foods. The plan has a great
response in the UK as they can get quality foods within their convenient time (Capaldi,
2016).
On the other hand, it is noticed that people in the UK have much money to spend. Thus,
Morison has introduced a wide range of food and grocery products. In this way, people can
purchase enough, and also they will have freedom to spend their money on the necessary
products (Capaldi, 2016).
Ethical:
In many firms, it is one of the most disgusting parts is forcing people to work overtime and
don't treat them well. Thus, it is crucial for the companies to be familiar pay good wages to
the employees. However, many companies are misusing the power and pay less. In this way,

the Morison has implemented ethical policies to meet the employee requirements and pay
them well for their work (Trong Tuan, 2012).
The environmental problem is one of the most harmful ethical problems which occurs from
the food retail sectors. In the process, the companies import international supply to add flavor
in their products and add those suppliers in their supply chain (Trong Tuan, 2012). These
imports are made through the aeroplane, ships, and trains. These all emits pollution, and the
global environment becomes affected. Morison has taken the initiative to add suppliers from
the locality to avoid this ethical problem.
Environment:
The forest is the main source to save the environment. They consume carbon, rainwater and
cool down the temperature of the earth. Thus, Morison has invested a lot to save the
environment by introducing green office. They have reduced the consumption of papers,
taking an initiative to save water and dispatch wastes in certain place (Trong Tuan, 2012).
The importance for food retailers of meeting their social, ethical, environmental and
corporate social responsibilities
In this report will discuss the essentialness for retailers in meeting their social, moral,
environmental and corporate obligations. Social is a fundamental component for Morrison's
to follow and respond to in light of the way that social is to do with the all-inclusive
community lifestyle, eating schedule, religion, family and wealth and those will trigger the
arrangements and advantage of retailers. Development is an issue which has taken by
Morrison because in there's a climb of relocation into the UK from different terrain countries
(Smith and Trant, 2003). Morrison moreover pondered presence conform issue as there's
development in experiences of working people not having the ability to have support or cook
sustenance given nonappearance of time. The result of this part if Morrison's didn't respond to

it is that they will lose rate of their bit of the general business which is acknowledged to be
the working people. Ethical and the environmental variable is a fundamental issue for
Morrison's because there are individuals who do consider what they support or purchase, this
can be characteristic things to sensible trading. Morrison's have thought about this issue as a
result of an extension of reports in uncalled for treatment to agriculturists who produces crops
for gigantic association besides challenges from people. Morrison's have made this issue into
move in light of the way that there's an extension reports of all the factors which impacts
planet earth and one of them is pollution from carbon transmission which is released from
