Food Sustainability Index
The food sustainability index was an approach developed BCFN Foundation together with the
Economist Intelligence Unit, and they had an objective to equip various individuals with
knowledge on food sustainability. The index deals with issues like nutrition, sustainable
agriculture, and food waste, an initiative that goes on all over the world (Agovino et al., 2018).
They BCFN and the Economist Intelligence Unit gathers information from 67 nations globally to
come up with the best practices and the sectors that need improvement regarding the food
situations and the Sustainable Development Goals (Carlsen & Bruggemann, 2019).
The food sustainability index is crucial because it gives an oversight on food sustainability
status across the globe based on environmental, societal, and economic factors. Consequently, it
highlights how the food systems will affect the 2030 initiatives to achieve all the seventeen
Sustainability Development Goals (Agovino et al., 2018). The essential tools to acquire
sustainable food systems are education, advocacy, and policy. Therefore, FSI utilizes these
essentials to compare food system indicators in different countries to incorporate the best
methods for stakeholders in the food systems.
Significantly, researching food sustainability is crucial because it helps in the promotion of
healthy food systems, consequently reducing poverty and eliminating issues related to hunger
and malnutrition. Additionally, research always appreciates the efforts of FSI as it addresses
some of the problems it does discuss (Carlsen & Bruggemann, 2019). Conducting an intensive
study on food sustainability also helps individuals understand how they can achieve
