INTRODUCTION
Functional areas refer to different departments within an organisation. There are many areas
such as, marketing, finance, human resource, technology and equipment. These areas have
different roles and responsibilities which is beneficial for growth of company (Kasaev and et.al.,
2019). IOM Electronics Ltd is a well- known organisation having 200 employees. It is based
over two sites in Manchester and Liverpool. The report describes various functional areas in
business organisation. Different types of skills which is required at the workplace by employees
so that they can work more efficiently is described.
MAIN BODY
Various functional areas
There are many departments in an organisation and work is divided according to area. Some
functional areas in business organisation are:
Marketing
This is one of the area which is required in business organisation to increase sales of
company. Marketing department helps in making strategies for promotion of products and attract
customers by providing them information with the help of advertisement. It is the responsibility
of marketing manager to increase sales of IOM electronics (Dewi and Darma, 2019). A
marketing manager is responsible for identifying potential markets where they can sell their
products, determine needs of customers so that product can be made according to that. They
select channel of distribution so that customers can get products easily.
Marketing manager helps in attracting people and increase brand awareness among
customers through campaigns. They are also managing day to day activities and make plans or
strategies for growth and development of company. In IOM electronics, there should be
marketing department which helps in promotion of products and increase sales of company. It is
important to make plans after analysing market situation so that needs of customers can be
satisfied (Lee and Falahat, 2019).
Human resource
It is one of the important department which helps in managing all the activities of
company and handling all issues. Human resource manager is responsible for recruiting and
selecting best candidate for the company. They organise training and development sessions for

employees so that they can enhance their knowledge by learning new things and develop some
skills which are required at the workplace. Human resource manager is deciding payroll of every
member and apply performance management tool to evaluate performance of employees. They
are solving issues which arise between workers and employer, give rewards or benefits to
employees on the basis of their performance (Fenech, Baguant and Ivanov, 2019). They are
taking interview and hiring appropriate candidate for the organisation. Human resource manager
is responsible for making rules and regulations, policies and procedures which should be
followed by everyone. In IOM electronics, there must be HR department because it helps in
motivating employees to work efficiently. It is important to influence workers and boost their
confidence by fulfilling their needs so that they can work efficiently.
Finance
Finance department plays a crucial role in every business and organisation because every
firm needs money and there must be a person who handles all this. Finance manager is
responsible for managing day to day expenses and recording all the details in books. It will help
in determining total expenses and income of an organisation. This helps in finding how much
profit has been earned by the company and make future plans according to that. Finance manager
is responsible for preparing financial reports and forecast about future (Kimanzi and Gamede,
2020). They oversee financial details so that legal requirements are met and make sure that all
work is done by following rules and regulations. In IOM electronics, there should be finance
department which will handle day to day expenses and income generated.
Technology and equipment
Technology and equipment area handles issues related to machines or they are
conducting market research to identify about new technology. They are responsible for providing
resources to employees so that work can be done in systematic way and business can run
smoothly. IT manager evaluate and install software so that employees can work properly and
there will be no problem. The primary function of IT department is to make sure that network
runs properly and also check maintenance of computer network within an organisation (Cheung,
Wang and Zhuang, 2017). Managers are also responsible for making plans, coordinating, leading
computer related activities in a company. In IOM electronics, technology and equipment
manager is responsible for making plans and install software in computers so that employees can
work properly.

Types of skills needed by employees
There are many skills which is required at the workplace in employees so that work can be
done in systematic manner and there will be less chances of mistake.
Communication skill- This is one of the important skill which is required at the workplace
because it helps in influencing people. Human resource manager handles all issues and recruit
candidates so; it is essential to have good communication skill. This creates positive impact on
others and help in attracting more customers (Coffelt, Grauman and Smith, 2019). A marketing
manager should have good communication skill because it helps in convincing people to buy
products or beneficial in increasing sales of company. Good communication skills help in
building positive image in company and helps in building relationship with other members.
When task is given in teams then it is easy to motivate members so that they can work efficiently
and it will help in achieving goals & objectives of company.
Leadership and motivation skill- This skill helps in motivating employees to improve their
performance and boost their confidence. It is important to increase morale of workers so that
they can work effectively and focus on accomplishing goals of organisation. When there is
workload, task is given in groups and a leader is being made who is responsible for providing
guidance to employees. Leader make plans or strategies for growth and development of
company, they give instructions to team members for how to accomplish targets (Andriani and
et.al., 2018). So, an employee should have leadership and motivation skill because it helps in
satisfying needs of workers and boos their confidence to work efficiently.
Problem solving and decision making- This skill is required at the workplace because it helps in
solving issues among employees. A good manager should have problem solving skill and have
the ability to take quick decisions. In all the functional areas there are some issues and to solve
that manager has to take action. They have to take quick decisions which is beneficial for growth
of company. Manager should find creative and unique solution of problem and have the ability to
take correct decision (Abubakar and et.al., 2019). In all the departments such as, finance,
marketing, human resource and other areas, it is crucial to take appropriate decision so that work
can be done smoothly.
Training and development skill- It includes advanced research skill, ability to learn new things,
develop some skills which are required in an organisation. To work effectively in functional
areas, it is crucial to have the ability to learn new things and enhance knowledge. This will help

in growth of company and goals can be achieved. An employee should never stop learning
process because there are many things to learn while working in company. There are some skills
which are essential and help an individual person in future growth (Overton, 2017). This skill is
required to work effectively in functional areas and goals can be accomplished.
Interpersonal skill- Interpersonal skill refers to active listening, teamwork, patience, flexibility,
responsibility and dependability. It is important to have these skills because in all the functional
areas it is required and helps in creating positive environment in the organisation. An employee
should have the ability to listen things properly so that there will be no confusion and it will help
in achieving targets. Sometimes, work is given in teams to build relationship among employees
and helps in increasing communication between workers (Aziz and et.al., 2021). All people are
from different background and they need time to understand behaviour of each other. So, it is
important that an employee should have interpersonal skill so that work can be done effectively
and targets of IOM electronics can be accomplished.
Forward planning and delegation- For growth of IOM electronics it is essential that managers
should make plans or strategies so that form can earn more profit and build positive image in
minds of customers. Managers should have the quality to delegate some powers to juniors so that
they feel motivated and work efficiently. They can delegate some decision making power to
leaders, involve all members in meeting, ask them for suggestions (Riisgaard and et.al., 2017).
This can be applied in IOM electronics so that better plans can be made and it will help in
accomplishing goals of company.
CONCLUSION
From the above discussion it can be concluded that, there are different functional areas in an
organisation like, finance, marketing, human resource, technology and operations. All the
departments help in managing all activities of company and make plans for generating more
profit. Further, different types of skills such as, interpersonal skills, communication, motivation,
organisation and delegation skill, mentoring, leadership, problem solving and decision making
