INTRODUCTION
The following report will be discussing the business management scenario which is
required by John who has acquired a firm named IOM Electronics LTD. It is one of the leader
enterprise in their sector. The company operates with the employee base of 200 people working
in different departments in 2 different locations i.e. Manchester and Liverpool. The enterprise is
expanded in these two location and caters the customer with electronic commodities. Although,
John have little experience of market but it is not efficient for running an enterprise of this
particular size. The employees also need sufficient skills and knowledge so that the organization
can deliver the qualitative response to its customer's needs. The report will be highlighting the
functional areas of the enterprise and the skills needed by the workforce of different departments.
MAIN BODY
Business organization
The term business organization refers to the place or a infrastructural body which deals in
different products and service for gaining profits and achieve higher levels of success. IOM is an
enterprise which caters their customers with different products and services in the electronic
industry. The organization aims for the profit by providing distinct goods and after sales service
to its customer.
Functional areas of business.
Every business organization consists of different departments which work inter relatively
for the overall growth of the organization. This overall productivity in the organization can help
them to sideline the competitors and gain unexpected profits in their working tenure. In IOM
these departments are human resource management, sales department, marketing department,
equipment and technological department, finance department, operations department and R&D
team. Roles and responsibilities of these departments and its contribution in the overall
upliftment of the organization is discussed below:
 Human resource management (HRM)
The human resource department is the functional area of the business which focuses on
recruitment of the employees in the firm (Jirásek, 2018). The HRM is concerned towards the
allocation of human resource and physical resources in a manner that it can work effectively to

gain organizational goals. Practice and training that is needed to perform the specific job role is
organized by the HR team. The HR is also responsible for evaluating the payroll for different
employees in accordance with their work. Employees termination and other different aspects
related to human behaviour also comes under human resource management.
 Sales department
Sales is one of the most important aspect for any organization as it is the basis of the
revenue that is being generated by selling the products or service (Jakobsen, Lauvås and
Steinmo, 2019). This department in IOM is responsible for achieving the sales target that is
being determined by the management. The enterprise offers their customers a range of electronic
products and after sales services too which is managed by this department.
 Operations department
The operation department is responsible for carrying out various activities told by the
management. In the firm the responsibilities of operations department include implementing the
plans developed by the sales department in the respective way that is being needed by the sales
team. Department also focuses on the services provided after the sales for meeting the
expectations of the customers by providing them with effective services.
 Finance department
Cash flow in the firm acts as a fuel in running the business machinery effectively and
efficiently in both the long and short term (Lyutov, Uygun and Hütt, 2019). Finance department
in the firm is responsible for the respective activity of cash inflow and outflow. Arrangement and
organization of the funds is managed by finance team. This team allocates funds to different
department and maintains the accounts records.
 Marketing department
The awareness for the brand and its product or service is flourished by the team of
marketing which focuses on reaching the customer knowledge through different techniques. This
team in IOM is responsible for marketing the electronic products of the brand through different
techniques such as advertising, branding, social media marketing etc. This department in the
organization plays a vital role in boosting the sales of the firm.
 Equipments and technological department
There is an increasing use of different technology in the sector for the improvement of
products provided to the customers (Pak and et.al., 2019). IOM deals in the sector of electronics

which is a technological products and service sector and it needs different technological
equipment and other assets. The need of different equipment is evaluated and determined by this
department. Focusing towards the better production process this department analyses different
factors that can help in the concerned objective.
 Research and development team (R&D)
Continuous innovation in the products in the industry is a by-product of the effort of this
department. This department analyse the trend and preference in the customer behaviour and
develops the product accordingly so that the product can gain relevance. The continuous research
and development in a product leads to its up gradation of quality and features. It can eventually
result as the one of the unique product that can help in capturing the markets through customer
attraction.
Types of skills needed by employees to be able to work effectively in these functional areas
Skill-sets of employees base of the organization is an important aspect that every firm
focuses on because it improves the overall quality and quantity of the work done by them. In
IOM different skills are needed by the employees so that every functional area can operate
effectively in their particular sector and can contribute to the overall productivity of the firm
(Garg and et.al., 2021). Workforce in the marketing department needs to upgrade themselves in
context of the trend and creativity so that the marketing of the products and services can be done
perfectly to gain the customer recognition. They need to brush up their skills in the data
interpretation and strategical field so that the data of customer behaviour can be interpreted
accurately and the marketing plans can be developed accordingly.
The human resource management which focuses on the employees of the organization
and their behaviour, has to be skilled in the field of technology and should be patient so that the
negotiation with the employees can be done favourably. Communication skills of HR
representation should be effective so that message and orders by the higher management can be
delivered loud and clear. Effective communication can also solve the queries and grievance of
the employees in proper manner. Further on, the operations department should possess the
empathetical behaviour as they communicate with the customers on behalf of the firm. Empathy
in their behaviour can help them deeply listen to the customer problems and provide a solution
that can satisfy the customer needs.

Managing the cash flow in the organization is not an easy task as the department have to
answerable for every penny (Boon, Den Hartog and Lepak, 2019). To maintain the smooth
financial activities in the firm the employees should gain proficiency in accounts and the
software for the respective task should also be learned. Skills developed in the accounting
software can improve the accuracy of financial reports and strategies for increasing the funds can
be developed accordingly. In the R&D department the researcher and other employees can
develop innovative skills and different researching methods can be improved. This may help
them to do better innovations in the product and services provided by the organization.
Knowledge and awareness of factors of external environment can be included in the skill set of
the employees in this department so that they can do better innovation while considering these
factors as well.
Skills that can prove as effective point for the working of sales department includes the
communication, collaboration and problem solving. Effective communication skills can
definitely increase the quality of strategies and its implementation methods as the objectives of
the process will be mentioned clearly (Stone, Cox and Gavin, 2020). Collaboration between the
colleagues will improve the productivity of the strategies as the different mind-set will be
involved in the strategy making process. Problems that are being identified as a barrier in
increasing or achieving the sales target has to be resolved in order to achieve the objective.
Problem solving skills in the employees can be a solution as the effective ideas for the
elimination of the barriers can be availed by the team.
CONCLUSION
The above report has concluded the organizational functioning areas and the
improvement needs in the respective areas. The report is being prepared for the knowledge of
John who has acquired the IOM electronic LTD. So that the organization can be structured by
proper allocation of duties and responsibilities. Proper coordination in different departments of
company can increase the size of the organization as the customer needs can be fulfilled and the
profits can be maximized. Inter relative working of every department can lead the organization
towards higher survival chances. The focus of the management towards the skills of the
employees mentioned in the report can increase the overall quality of the organization. Collective

effort of employees and proper strategies provided by the management can boom the
productivity of the firm.
