Fundamentals of Tourism and TravelIntroductionOver the years, tourism has become an important part of every modern economy.Currently, tourism is one of the major industries of the UK economy. The country enjoys varioustourist attractions that attract people from all over the world. Noteworthy, London stands as theworld’s best tourist destination. Thus, the tourism industry plays an significant role in theeconomy of the UK. For this reason, this paper seeks to determine the key and historicaldevelopments in the tourism industry. It will also focus on some or the reasons why tourists visitLondon as a tourist destination. Afterwards, the paper will discuss the six main elements thatshould be regarded when developing a tourist destination. Finally, this paper will identify andoutline some of the key organizations involved in the tourism supply chain in the UK. The historical and Current Developments in the Tourism Industry`The tourism industry has grown significantly since 1945. Today, people enjoy spendingtheir time in different places from those that they have already been to already. Thus, it is thechange in human behavior and their expectations from the industry that has brought aboutlandmark development in the tourism industry. In the beginning, the tourism industry comprisedof traveling and transportation. However, today, the industry has grown significantly to compriseof not only the travelling but also visiting areas that offer ancillary comfort to clients. After 1960,various factors changed, thereby creating a significant interest among people to become tourists.Specifically, people had more free time to tour places and developed interest for long trips. Whatis more, the growth in the per capita income of individuals in the U.K brought about animprovement in the tour packages offered by different tour and travel companies in the country. 3

Over the years, the tourism industry has undergone significant changes. Today,companies into the tourism industry offer new and improved tour packages that are customeroriented. In turn, this results in an increase in their clientele. Currently, tourism firms offer theirclients packages that not only comprise of travelling services but also the management ofeverything else that is tour related including accommodation, transportation, hotel and foodservices, among others. As a result, the structure of travel is classified with the diversification oftourism business and emergence of various sectors within the industry. These sectors includetour operations, travel services, hotel industries, confreres and events conducting firms, andarrangement of passport and visa service companies. Over the years, the United Kingdom has offered a fantastic range of tourist attractionsand destinations. Consequently, this has earned the country a significant amount of revenue andcontributed to the GDP of the country. In the past, nearly all tourism in the UK was domestic,with the wealthy families of the country holidaying around the UK. In the 1970s, the boomingeconomic conditions in the country allowed companies to offer their employees more time off.As a result, the employees had more time and disposable income to spend on tourism activities.Also, there are various tourism types that occur within the country, among them beach tourism,city breaks, cultural tourism, activity tourism, ecological tourism, and mountain and hill tourism. City BreaksIt is worth noting that the country hosts huge cities such as London, Edinburgh andNewcastle that offer a huge variety of activities. Primarily, these tourist towns and cities are built4
