The United States of America focuses on providing quality care which is patient-centered and an
affordable healthcare system that anyone can have access. Whoever, there are various factors
which affect transformations in the healthcare sector. According to the report on “The Future of
Nursing” in a collaboration between Robert Wood Johnson and Institute of Medicine (IOM).
This was one of the health visions which were passed in 2010 by the Congress and enacted into
law under health care legislation. This paper aims to discuss the importance of Institute of
Medicine (IOM), explain state-based actions of collaboration and finally, discuss initiatives that
spearheaded state action including barriers experienced in the nursing profession.
Importance of Institute Of Medicine
Robert Johnson Foundation focused on improving quality healthcare through fostering
healthy communities, transforming healthcare and health, ample workforce and enabling children
to grow with healthy weights. It also aimed at conducting extensive research about healthcare
sector and come up with recommendations about the future of nursing including the variations
institutional frameworks at both state and the federal levels (Battié, 2013).
IOM initiative aimed at improving the future of nursing through developing a vision for a
health care system that can be transformed. The plan was to make the health care system
accessible to everybody in the United States since it enhances a healthy population.
IOM also helped to provide Americans with better access to the health care system they

The state Action Coalitions contains the recent update by Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation of the twenty-one new collaborations that will aid in the advancement of the
recommendations of the report. The states collaborated on working with the Future of Nursing
with the aim of improving healthcare services provided to Americans through enhancing the
leadership of the nursing workforce in general.
State action coalitions were also essential to the future of the nursing profession
advancement. This was achieved through state educational institutions such as universities that
introduced a new program to help the successful applicants graduate with a degree of Bachelor
of Nursing. These programs are relatively cost effective, and allowed student to acquire its
degree alongside other degrees. This is to the advantage of the students who had a passion for
pursuing nursing and never got the chance to study (Smeltzer et al., 2015).
How Initiatives Have Advanced Nursing
In Texas, nursing students are given support to make sure they finish their nursing career
when they start at Universities. This helps the state to have an adequate and skilled workforce
who can provide quality healthcare to the public. It helps to fulfill the collaboration vision of
ensuring access to affordable healthcare to all people including those in our communities (Skiba,
2013).
Another initiative includes data collection within the state to show the progress of
collaboration within the healthcare system. This initiative focuses on assessing efforts put in
nursing in ensuring the public benefit from services at healthcare settings. It helps to maintain a
culture of health which is acceptable within nursing and outside nursing through a diversity of
efforts in the healthcare system (Iacobucci, Daly, Lindell & Griffin, 2013).
