SECTION A
1. According to young, there are five faces for oppression, these include:
Exploitation: This is an act performed by individuals to make use of labour to attain
good amount of profit when using in fairly terms. For example, individuals working at sweat
shops are exploited even when they are paid for their efforts. This payment in terms of wage is
not enough in accordance with the money made by the company from their work. People
working in mining industry are exploited on day to day basis as in the case where they do not
find any value material, they are not paid for the efforts.
Marginalisation: This oppression is an act of confining within a group of people that
takes the place of lower in social standing or present at the edge of it. This aspect contributes in
worsening the exploitation as the society is not allowing such individuals to even work as labour
(Philo, 2018). The main base for building marginalisation is regarding the race. Example for this
oppression includes, aboriginal communities that are excluded to a part of society and are pushed
away from the homeland as the area is developing.
Powerlessness: This is linked with the theory that some individuals holds the power
while other do not. This makes the people with power become the dominating class and
powerless to take orders without any right to them. Powerlessness is related with the injustices
and lack of involvement in decision- making process. It leads to exposure towards having a
disrespectful treatment as they are from the lower standards.
Cultural imperialism: It deals with setting up a norm of the culture that is followed by
the ruling class within the society. They will control other people and thus, making all the beliefs
of society disseminated on a wider context. For example, heterosexual holds the majority place
in the society and so other types of sexuality is considered to be 'not normal'.
Violence: this is the most visible form of oppression and involves having unprovoked
attacks on someone's property and that individual itself. The sole intention behind these attacks is
to damage, humiliate and destroy the person. Examples of violence includes all forms of sexual
violence and hate related crime.
2. Place: This is related with the location that is useful in determining the region based on the
surface of Globe or even elsewhere. It has geographic coordinates and situated at 2- dimensional
surface.
